  3. Activity 1 • What types of students participate in Special Olympics? • Make a list of words that describe a student that participates in Special Olympics.

  4. Outdoor School Includes Everyone! You may see students with special needs at your school or in your neighborhood. Disability Awareness Remember, we are people first and disabled last.

  6. Activity 2 • How could you be a friend and help a student with special needs? • How will your high school student leaders need assistance with this student?

  7. How You Can Help! • Be a role model • Dress appropriately for the weather • Offer to be a walking buddy for the student • Encourage the student, don’t enable (sometimes the student is expected to tie their shoe, zip their coat, etc.)

  8. More Ways to Help! • Include the student in your cabin activities and field study activities • Remember, like a small child, they may need reminders on how to act. You may need to say, “No, don’t pull on my clothes.” or “No, that’s my brush.

  9. More Ways to Help (continued) • The student may try to get your attention, it is okay to let them know that “I don’t like being touched.” • Just as you learned earlier, the most important thing is to be kind and polite

  10. Summative Assessment: • How should you act if you have a student with special needs living and working with you at Outdoor School? • List three things you can do to assist your high school student leader and Outdoor School staff with the student.
