  1. Math 170 Functions, Data, and Models 04 Section 1.4 Formulas for Linear Functions Any questions on Lab 01?

  2. Basic Concepts

  3. Example 1 (1.4 #39) An empty bottle is tossed from a hot-air balloon. Its upward velocity is measured every second and recorded in the Table. • Describe the motion of the bottle in words. • When does the bottle reach its maximum height above the earth? • Find a formula for velocity as a function of time. • Explain the physical significance of the slope of your formula. • Explain the physical significance of the axes intercepts.

  4. Example 2

  5. Example 3 • Find a formula for the function described by the graph.

  6. Example 4 • The stock of company ZYX costs $28 per share and the stock of company ABC costs $20 per share. You have decided to buy a total of $600 worth of stock in the two companies. • Find a linear relationship between the amounts of each stock you buy. • What are the intercepts? Interpret. • Rewrite the equation to express the amount of ABC stock purchased as a function of the amount of ZYX stock purchased. • What is the domain and range of the previously obtained function? • Interpret the slope.

  7. Insert point ___ into Table 1.2, then determine if the three data points in the table describe a • Linear function • Non-linear function • Non-function ConcepTest • Section 1.4 •Question 2

  8. In the equation 3x + 2y = 9, if x increases by 2 then y • Increases by 2 • Decreases by 2 • Increases by 3 • Increases by 6 • Decreases by 3 ConcepTest • Section 1.4 •Question 8

  9. If x + 2y – 5 = 0 then an equation of the same line is • y = -1/2x + 5/2 • 3x + 6y = 15 • y – 0 = -1/2(x – 5) • All of the above • None of the above ConcepTest • Section 1.4 •Question 16

  10. If points (1,3) , (3,a) , and (b,11) all lie on the same line, then the number of possible values for a and b is • None • One • Two • Infinite ConcepTest • Section 1.3 •Question 2

  11. Which function has the greatest slope? • A • B • C • D • None ConcepTest • Section 1.3 •Question 4
