What is Dyer's theory? • Richard Dyer states that the star is a construction and not a real person. • He claims that the star is constructed through music videos, magazines and advertising. • For example, Miley Cyrus has become famous for riding a wrecking ball half naked, and she would not do this in the privacy of her own home, meaning Miley Cyrus and the star are two different people.

  3. The star as a commodity • Stars are produced to make a profit off related merchandise e.g.- t shirts, posters and mugs. • Record labels will create similar stars as they know how certain patterns and trends work and how it will get them money. • Therefore, we have lots of similar boy bands E.g. One Direction and The Wanted.

  4. The star as an ideology • Stars will represent certain social groups and views and will therefore create certain ideologies. • As a result of this, fans will somewhat copy their style and share the same views as them. • E.G many people share Beyonce’s view on how Women are independent and shouldn’t be controlled by men.

  5. Paradox of the star • Richard Dyer explains that there is a paradox of the ‘star’ • The paradox is • That the star must be both ordinary and extraordinary • The star must be both present and absent.

  6. My example of the star theory! • Selena Gomez- is A famous singer and a well-known actress she has been in the public eye from the age of 7, when she starred on the well-known show Barney, she then was on Disney channel for many years, then went onto films, when along side this she was a huge pop singer. • Selena is constructed as a beautiful pop icon who is a role model for lots of little girls as a lot of the Gen-Z generation have grown up along side her. • She has been constructed a lot by the media, and been shaped and known by, her love life with A-list singer Justin Bieber and her medical conditions she has suffered from. • She has made fortunes off her social media following- In 2016 she was the most followed person on Instagram- she is known for having highly engaged fans, and whenever she goes on tour, she is able to earn a fortune from the sell of merchandise. She also earned a fortune from all of her albums, and she was the highest paid celebrity on Instagram in 2017!
