  3. Problems Arise • For decades people arose that were against the Catholic Church. • One John Wycliffe believed that all should have access to the Bible. • People like Desiderius Erasmus, a humanist scholar, did not agree with the Catholic Church.

  4. Indulgences • When Martin Luther gets involved, his actions begin the Reformation. • Tetzel, A Dominican Monk, was selling indulgences. • Martin disagreed with the fact that if you bought his indulgence you would get your family to Heaven even if you didn’t repent. http://media.allrefer.com/s4/t/p0007232-indulgence-selling-during-the-reformation.gif

  5. 95 Thesis • October 31, 1517, Martin posted 95 arguments primarily against the selling of indulgences, on the Wittenberg Church in Germany. • As a result, Tetzel and Luther had a debate, both sides went away claiming victory.

  6.   7. Fights Erupt • In 1522 knights of the Rhineland rebel, citing Luther’s thoughts. • A peasant revolt broke out in Germany in 1524, citing Luther’s ideas. • This rebellion was later crushed in 1525.

  8. Reformation Spreads • Despite the Catholic Church, the Reformation spreads. • It travels to France; the French Huguenots leading this group of Calvinists. • It travels to the New World as people seek refuge from persecution.

  11. War Looms • More and more officials became Protestant consequently seizing Catholic lands. • Protestants refused to meet with officials at councils and diets. • Charles the V captured Protestant strong holds in Germany in 1546.
