  1. Digital Switch-over

  2. What is it? • The digital switchover is the conversion from analogue TV to digital TV broadcasting. • All television sets will need to be upgraded or converted.

  3. When is it happening? • Region by region between 2008-2012 every household in the u.k will switch over to digital. • (For our region will be in 2012)

  4. How will it affect me? • Good: After the switchover, you will get access to channels which were previously exclusive to digital (such as: BBC 3&4, ITV 2&3, e4, more4, cbbc, cbeebies an bbc news 24) on freeview. • For current digital users they may see a decrease in prices due to an influx in customers. • Bad: Many people will need to update tv or buy a digital box/aerial.

  5. What will I need? • About 66% of households already use sky an cable and will not need anything, but for those using freeview boxes they will have to re-tune at both stages of the switchover and then again frequently in order to keep up-to-date with their channels. • People currently using terrestrial TV will have to get a digital box which starts at £40. • Some older TV’s will need to be replaced if they cannot receive digital signals and between 2-10% of households will need new aerials.

  6. What help can I get? • The government has introduced a help scheme for people who may have difficulties with the switchovers. • It is funded by the BBC licence fee. • It will only be available to those 75+, blind or partially sighted or entitled to social security benefits.

  7. why is it happening? • The given reason for the switchover is that digital is the best technology for broadcasting television and we should be able to receive it from free so everyone can enjoy it. • 26% of the country cannot have the digital signal switched on (for receiving through an aerial) until the analogue is switched off. 98.5% of the country will be able to receive digital signal through an aerial after the switchover. • All in all we think this is most probably being done because most people will just switch over to sky or virgin rather than having to re-tune as it will be a much easier way of receiving TV.
