Chapter 14-Heat

Chapter 14-Heat. 14-1 Heat as Energy Transfer calorie is the amount of energy required to raise 1 g of a substance by 1 degree Celsius. Kilocalorie is = 1,000 calories or 1Calorie. 4.186 J= 1cal Heat is the energy transferred from one object to another. See Example 14-1.

  1. Chapter 14-Heat 14-1 Heat as Energy Transfer calorie is the amount of energy required to raise 1 g of a substance by 1 degree Celsius. Kilocalorie is = 1,000 calories or 1Calorie. 4.186 J= 1cal Heat is the energy transferred from one object to another. See Example 14-1.

  2. 14-2 Distinction Between Temperature, Heat and Internal Energy • Internal energy is a sum of all of the energy of the molecules in a substance.(also called thermal energy.) • Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a substance. • Heat refers to the transfer of energy

  3. 14-3 Internal Energy • U= internal energy • U= N(1/2 mv2)= 3/2 NkTk= 3/2 nRTk • Rotational and vibrational energy should also be considered.

  4. 14-4 Specific Heat • Q=mcDT • DT should always be +. • See specific heats chart p 421 • See Example 14-3 p421 • See Example 14-4 p421

  5. 14-5 Calorimetry • You cannot measure heat directly. • Heat is measured with a calorimeter. • See model of calorimeter page 423. • See Examples 14-5 and 14-6.
