  3. Introduction to Gastric Plication Laparoscopicgastric plication is a newer minimally invasive weight-loss surgery technique that reduces the size of the stomach capacity to approximately 3 ounces. Gastric plication surgery, sometimes called the pseudo sleeve surgery, functions much like the gastric sleeve by creating a smaller stomach that restricts the amount of food you can eat. This is a novel bariatric surgery procedure wherein a part of the stomach is sewn with no absorbable sutures to reduce its size. The shape and volume of the stomach becomes similar to that seen after sleeve Gastrectomy. Although the long term data with this procedure are still not available, the short term results are quite promising. The possibility of dilation of the stomach in the long term is a concern which has curtailed the popularity of this procedure amongst surgeons.

  4. Procedure of Gastric Plication Surgery In basic terms, gastric plication means creating a smaller pouch or sleeve out of your stomach, accommodating less food and moving it at a slower rate. This in turn lowers your appetite. As opposed to the gastric sleeve, plication does not achieve this through the removal of a large part of the stomach, but medical stitching instead. This means that for some time (current estimates say approximately 1 year) the procedure is reversible without any significant complications. The restrictive effect of the bariatric procedure is achieved without removing any parts of the stomach, massively restructuring it or adding any foreign objects into it. Since it does not restrict the digestive tract, there will also be fewer issues with absorbing nutrients such as vitamins and minerals beyond eating smaller amounts in general. You will feel the need to eat less, which allows you to lose excess weight more easily. The procedure is still fairly new, however, and research is still ongoing. 5. Recovery from Gastric Plication- The patient needs to follow a restricted diet for about 6 weeks after surgery, and then take up a typical bariatric diet. For the first two weeks, the patient has a liquid diet. In weeks three and four, they can graduate to vegetable based soups and soups that lack carbohydrates. By weeks five and six, they can move on to fruits, yogurt and soups that are more substantial like chowders. The patient consults with a bariatric dietician, who helps them adjust to the new diet. Foods are introduced slowly, and the bariatric diet should be fully in place after about six months. Patients are encouraged to plan, prepare their own meals, and keep a diet journal of everything they eat. Food should be weighed before it is prepared or eaten to make sure that the patient gets the vitamins and minerals that they need. Patients are also taught to eat slowly, to stop eating before they feel full, and to avoid alcohol with meals. They should also wait at least an hour after a meal before they drink. On the other hand, drinking some cool water a few minutes before a meal helps to make the patient feel full. Dr. Achal Agrawal is a best Bariatric Surgeon in Indore and also a specialist in Gastric Plication surgery as well as all types’ laparoscopic and bariatric surgeries at Indore Laparoscopy Center.

  6. Advantages • No rerouting of intestines as with gastric bypass • Does not involve implanting a banding device around a portion of the stomach • No adjustments are needed as with gastric banding • Procedure may be reversible, unlike sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass
