  2. Today’s Agenda • What is Science? • Introduction to Chemistry (Section 1.1) • Distribution of textbooks • Go over syllabus

  3. What is Science?

  4. Introduction to Chemistry (1.1) • Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. • Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. • What are some examples of matter? • Can you think of anything that is not matter?

  5. Five Areas of Chemistry Study • Organic chemistry is the study of chemicals that contain carbon. • Carbon-based compounds make up a majority of substances found in living beings. • Organic chemistry is the bane of almost every science major’s existence.

Five Areas of Chemistry Study • Inorganic chemistry is the study of chemicals that, uh… don’t contain carbon. • If organic chemistry is the chemistry of life, inorganic chemistry is the study of death? • Not really, but inorganic compounds are found in non-living things, like rocks and metals.

  7. Five Areas of Chemistry Study • Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living creatures, like respiration and photosynthesis. • Don’t confuse with organic! Organic chemists study the compounds, biochemists study reactions in living things.

Five Areas of Chemistry Study • Analytical chemistry focuses on the composition of matter (what things are made of), such as finding the amount of lead in your drinking water. • Analytical chemists get to use all sorts of fun toys like NMR machines, spectrophotometers, and lots of other really expensive sounding machines.

Five Areas of Chemistry Study • Physical chemistry deals with mechanisms, rates, and energy transfers during chemical reactions. • This is my personal favorite – nanotechnology often falls into this field. • Heat transfer, changing of states, and cooling rates all fall under physical chemistry. • It’s important to note that these areas aren’t exclusive – a chemist will often work in multiple areas at a time, depending on their project.

Two Applications of Chemistry • Chemistry can exist for two reasons – to pursue chemical knowledge in the academic sense, or to do chemistry for commercial reasons or a societal goal. • Pure chemistry is chemistry knowledge for its own sake (professors, etc.) • Applied chemistry is directed toward a particular goal or application. (Pharmaceutical companies, etc.)

About Me - Professionally • Mr. Phil Cerami – born in Nashville, TN, raised in Lansdale, PA • High School: North Penn HS in Lansdale, graduated 2004 • Captain of PA State Championship Academic Decathlon Team in 2004 • College: B.S. in Secondary Education and Chemistry from Penn State University, graduated 2009 • Worked in the Center for Nanoscale Science under Dr. Paul Weiss • 5th Degree Black Belt in traditional Taekwon-Do, 17 years of martial arts experience

About Me - Personally • I am very much addicted to root beer, especially pure cane sugar types – of commercial versions, Barq’s is my favorite. • I am a prototypical geeky science teacher – I play many different types of video games, especially Zelda, Pokémon, and Final Fantasy. • Despite this, I am a HUGE Philly sports fan. Last year, I had the opportunity to go to the World Series and the Stanley Cup Finals. • Gaming systems: PS3, Wii • Favorite Anime: Cowboy Bebop • Favorite TV Shows: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Frisky Dingo, and Lost • Favorite Movie: Fight Club, though Oldboy, a Korean film, is also excellent.
