Practical Exercise #1 SITUATION: You are an OPS SGT and one of your quality soldiers (SPC) who has been assigned to your section for 18 months informs you that she found out that she is 6 weeks pregnant. She wants to know what her options are and how this will effect her Army future. She displays leadership potential and you just spoke with the 1SG about recommending her for the next promotion board. EVENTS: 1.She is single and desires to stay in the Army and make it a career 2.She wants to know if she has to still do PT (this is her first ever profile) 3.She has a profile and wants to know what she is allowed to do and what her restrictions are 4.She wants to know if she can wear civilian clothes when she can no longer fit into her BDUs 5.She wants to know if she qualifies for Government housing 6.She wants to know if there are any agencies that can help her out financially

The actions must be specific enough to modify or maintain the subordinate’s behavior and include a specific time line for implementation and assessment (Part IV below): Plans to stay in the Army after having the child and making it a career Start preparing a family care plan on or about the seventh month of pregnancy Keep supervisor informed of all changes in profile and work only within the guidelines of the profile Check with doctor to get an understanding of any restrictions (driving, lifting) Participate in the pregnancy Physical Fitness Program At this time do not plan on going back home to deliver the baby but will keep supervisor updated if this plan changes Coordinate with the unit Supply Sergeant for maternity uniforms Contact housing to get on the housing list Enroll in the next financial budget class offered Make an appointment with the WIC office to get information about the program and to get enrolled DA FORM 4856-E (Reverse)

This soldier is currently serving a four-year enlistment. Your unit is preparing for an upcoming JRTC Rotation. EVENTS: 1. Upcoming deployment to JRTC / Pre-Deployment Checklists 2. CTT Training 3. Soldier is scheduled to qualify on his/her weapon within the next 30 days 4. This soldier's short term goals are: 1.     To increase APFT score by 20 points from 235 to 255 2.     To have a safe JRTC rotation 5. Long Term Goals: 1. To complete Associate Degree 2. To be put into a leadership position 3. Score 300 on APFT 6. Soldier is within 7 months of being in the primary zone for promotion. (Is he ready?)

The actions must be specific enough to modify or maintain the subordinate’s behavior and include a specific time line for implementation and assessment (Part IV below): • Develop a four week individual physical fitness plan to support the goal of increasing APFT by 20 points • Enroll in a college class to work towards an associate degree • Obtain a copy of the packing list and conduct a joint inventory with supervisor • PMCS all equipment being taken to JRTC two weeks prior to deployment above and beyond regularly scheduled maintenance • Prepare for the train-up exercise for JRTC/study ROE • Take all valuables out of the car and secure the car in the BN designated area • Inventory all valuables and secure them inside wall lockers and supply SGT will band the wall lockers • Go to the SRP at scheduled time and attend all deployment briefings • Be ready for manifesting with ID Card, ID Tags, and all personal equipment • Inform family members that calling home will be limited • Request an opportunity to appear before the Soldier of the Month Board DA FORM 4856-E (Reverse)

  13. Practical Exercise #3 SITUATION: You are a Platoon Sergeant and you have an NCO (SGT Jones) who was disrespectful in language to you (a senior noncommissioned officer). This is the first time this has happened and he has been an outstanding NCO in the past. SGT Jones had a squad meeting yesterday and all the team leaders were very upset over the amount of details the squad was receiving. Last night SGT Jones was at the hospital with his sick child until 0200. You, the Platoon Sergeant, did not know about the meeting nor the sick child. EVENTS: 1.  At 1600 on 23 Oct 00, during formation, you told SGT Jones to have his squad clean up the platoon's section of the motor pool. 2.  On 23 Oct on or about 1600, SGT Jones confronted you (SFC Johnson). 3.  The confrontation led to SGT Jones raising his voice and becoming disrespectful within hearing range of the platoon formation, saying, “come on, this is bull$#!^” 4. You told SGT Jones to At-Ease (which he did) and you would talk to him after formation.

PART III - SUMMARY OF COUNSELING Complete this section during or immediately subsequent to counseling. o Your squad had the same detail for the last three weeks and it wasn’t fair to have it again. o You argued with me, becoming disrespectful and raising your voice and uttering a profanity at me. o This is insubordinate conduct toward a senior noncommissioned officer and is a violation of Article 91 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. This type of action can not and will not be tolerated. o Difference between a lawful and unlawful order o Appropriate action to take when you disagree with an order o You failed to be discreet and tactful when questioning your PSG (See Appendix B FM 22-100 pg B-2) In addition to being counseled on the points above, he/she received counseling on the following: (1) That continued behavior similar to that for which he/she has been counseled may result in punishment under Article 15, UCMJ, court-martial, or adverse action such as a bar to reenlistment, suspension of favorable personnel actions (promotion, retention, school), or other appropriate administrative sanctions; (2) That if this behavior continues that separation under the provisions of AR 635-200 may be initiated; (3) That if separated prior to ETS, that he/she could receive either an honorable, general, or other than honorable discharge for their current term of service, or their term of service would be uncharacterized if they have served less than 180 days on active duty; (4) The basis for each characterization of service and the discharge certificates received for each and that his/her character of service would become part of a permanent record and may be provided to any Federal agency if they were to apply for either federal employment or security clearance; (5) The possible effects that each type of discharge would have on reenlistment, civilian employment, veterans benefits, and related matters; (6) That a general discharge would cause loss of civil service retirement credit; (7) That an other than honorable discharge would result in him/her being reduced to the lowest enlisted rank, loss of payment of accrued leave, and loss of all benefits administered by the Veterans Administration and other federal and state agencies; (8) That separation prior to ETS may preclude him/her from enlisting in any component of the Armed Forces; (9) That separation prior to ETS may cause him/her to lose their entitlement to education benefits and money paid into the Army College Fund; (10) That separation prior to ETS may cause him/her to repay any unearned bonus received for enlistment or reenlistment; (11) That it would be unlikely that any attempt to have his/her characterization of service upgraded would be successful; (12) That he/she is encouraged to make every reasonable effort to ensure his/her performance and conduct meet military standards; (13) That he/she would be given a reasonable effort to bring their substandard performance and conduct to acceptable military standards.
