  1. The Cell • This unit will cover all the major living things on Earth • animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms

  2. The Cell • WHAT IS COMMON TO ALL THESE GROUPS? • body process • basic materials involved in metabolism (oxygen, food, H2O etc)

  3. The History of the Cell • Histology: is the study of special forms of cells and their association and organs.

  4. The History of the Cell • Histology is closely associated with Cytology. • Cytology: The study of cell structure.

  5. The Cell History

  6. The History of the Cell

  7. The History of the Cell

  8. The History of the Cell • Robert Hooke (1635-1703) • SCIENTIST • ASTRONOMER • ARCHEOLOGIST • PALAENTOLOGIST • PHILOSOPHER • ARCHITECT • WRITER......ARTIST.......TEACHER.......

  9. The History of the Cell • Robert Hooke (1635-1703) • CORK!! • Believe to be the first person to coin the word “Cell”: • ...I could exceedingly plainly perceive it to be all perforated and porous, much like a Honey-comb, but that the pores of it were not regular....these pores, or cells,... (Micrographia) • He came to the word cell because his research findings reminded him of monks’ cells

  10. The History of the Cell

  11. The History of the Cell

  12. The History of the Cell

  13. The History of the Cell • Robert Hooke (1635-1703) • Interesting fact or rumor? • he famously fought Isaac Newton!!

  14. The History of the Cell Robert Hooke’s Microscope

  15. The Cell History • The specialized compartments of a cell, the organelles, are so small that it was impossible to study their structure until the electron microscope was developed in 1938.

  16. How is it that we can see cell organelles? • Thanks to scientists! We were able to understand the structural organization of the organelles. • Who exactly?

  17. How is it that we can see cell organelles? • Thanks to scientists! We were able to understand the structural organization of the organelles. • Who exactly? • The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1974 was awarded jointly to Albert Claude, Christian de Duve and George E. Palade • They were awarded for their discoveries regarding the functional and structural organization of the cell organelles.

  18. Claude & De Duve & Palade • Pics

  19. How many cells in your body? • 100 trillion cells divided into about 200 different types! • Our muscles are made of muscle cells • Our livers of liver cells • There are even very specialized types of cells that make the enamel for our teeth or the clear lenses in our eyes!

  20. Scientific Method • Purpose • Hypothesis • Material/Apparatus • Method/Procedure • Observation/Diagrams/graphs etc • Discussion • Conclusion
