  2. In the Production of clean water •  It is the process of removing undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from contaminated water using bioremediation. Most water is filtered for human consumption. • There are biological bioremediation sand filters to produce clean water.

  3. in oil spills – an example The spill happened at Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies in 1979 around 88.3 million gallons of oil was spilt It happened when there was a storm on July 1979. which caused two super tankers to collide off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. This spill is the largest ship sourced oil spill in history! After the crash, both of the super tankers began to leak with oil and they eventually caught fire. One of the ships, the Aegean Captain managed to be towed back to Curacao, where its remaining cargo was recovered. The second ship, the Atlantic Express, was towed farther out to sea where it soon exploded 300 nautical miles from the coast. During this spill, 26 of the crew were killed and 88.3 million gallons of oil was spilt. The response to the incident included fire fighting efforts and the use of dispersants to treat the oil that spilled over the course of the accident and then while the Atlantic Empress was towed away. Luckily, only minor shore pollution was reported on nearby islands.

  4. Method of application • Bioremediation is a natural process that uses microorganisms to transform harmful substances into non-toxic carbon dioxide, water, and fatty acids.

  5. Where else is it used? • Bioremediation is also used at hazardous waste sites specifically, they are applied to waste sites facilitating the clean up of biodegradable contaminants. The majority of environmental hazards in which Bioremediation has proved successful include those of oil spills, gasoline contaminations, chlorinated solvents and other toxic chemical leaks.
