  2. What Is Hemophilia? • Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. • Mostly affects men. • People with hemophilia lack a protein called a clotting factor, which works with platelets to stop bleeding at the site of an injury.

  3. Hemophilia History Hemophilia wasn’t generally known because the people affected usually died before much was known about it. The most famous case of hemophilia, is that of Alexei Nikolaevich,Tsarevich of Russia. Alexei’s disease was kept hidden from the public because it would upset the public to have a Czar that couldn’t lead.

Types of Hemophilia. • Hemophilia A - The most common type, is caused by insufficient clotting factor VIII. • Hemophilia B -The second most common type, is caused by insufficient clotting factor IX. • Hemophilia C- in which signs and symptoms are often mild, is caused by insufficient clotting factor XI.

  5. Symptoms • Blood in The Urine • Unexplained Bruises • Blood in The Stool • Excessive Bleeding • Deep Bruises • Bleeding Gums • Irritability (in children) • Painin The Joints

  6. Diagnosis of Hemophilia Screening Tests Screening tests are blood tests that show if the blood is clotting properly. Types of screening tests • Complete Blood Count (CBC) • Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) Test • Prothrombin Time (PT) Test • Fibrinogen Test • Clotting Factor Tests

It was started in 1989; April 17 was chosen in honor of Frank Schnabel's birthday
