History • The ethnic makeup is mestizo 90%, white 9%, Amerindian 1% • The Spanish conquistadors severely reduced the Amerindian population • Unfair distribution of land. • In 1930 there was a massacre of 30,000 mostly Amerindian Salvadorans after a peasant uprising against landowners called “La Matanza.”
