  1. Technology, friend or foe? By Brendan Manteufel

  2. Action research question • Technology, friend or foe? Technology (in the form of ICT) is being rapidly implemented into classrooms all across Australia, but are teachers given the training and proper context to use these expensive assets efficiently? Are the benefits offered by technology worth the great expense? And in a world where technology evolves so quickly is it sustainable?

  3. Research base • Three Perspectives • Benefits of ICT in education • Difficulties in implementing and maintaining ICT in classrooms • Teacher adoption and use of technology • My ‘gap’ in the available research is that I could not find this data exclusive to the Australian context. My action research project will observe technology use in Brisbane classrooms, interview teachers and students and weigh up whether our current approach is as efficient and sustainable as it could be.

  4. Educational Context • Majority of observations in medium sized BCE school in South Brisbane. • Class of 26 students has access to 10 laptops and interactive white board. • Prac school expanding use of ICT. Working towards 1:1 laptop ratio. • Teacher creatively and enthusiastically uses IWB and laptops wherever possible. • Observations not limited to prac class, but entire school. • Online survey created to reach broader audience of teachers in the field.

  5. Methodology and rough timeline • Utilizing observations of various classes in prac school. I will observe their use of available technology and record my findings. • Analysing monetary cost of various ICT’s and comparing to see which is most cost efficient for the benefit gained. • Questionnaire sent to teachers all over Brisbane to assess their use and opinions of technology. This will give me a broad sample size to take deductions from. • Interviewing teachers and students to gain a more personal and in-depth perspective on technology use. • I have been and will continue to conduct observations throughout my prac school. I have begun preliminary research on initial and long term costing's of ICT. This will link with my observations to get a cost v benefit ranking. I will shortly begin interviews of teachers and students and my questionnaire was sent out several days ago. So far the responses I have received have been very interesting.
