  3. Language Arts • Harcourt Language Arts Program -Phonics -High-frequency words -Fluency -Comprehension -Robust vocabulary -Grammar and Writing -Spelling • Directions on my website on how to access Student book online

  4. Spelling • Included with Harcourt series and closely linked to reading and writing • Tested on 10 regular words; however, children have the option of taking the 5 challenge words as well • If you decide to take the 15 word test then you will be scored out of 15 • Spelling tests are on Fridays and Study guides with all 15 words will be sent home the Friday before

  5. Daily 5 • During our Language Arts block • Workstations all around Reading and Writing • Guided Reading is done during this time • Stamina! Stamina! • Book Bags • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Listen to Reading • Word Work • Work on Writing • Meet withTeacher

  6. Math • Flexible grouping depending on students’ strengths and needs- We will pretest at the start of various units to determine any need for regrouping. • Harcourt Series-Practice pages in a tear-out consumable • Chapter and Unit tests graded • Essential questions for each chapter-more problem solving

  7. Social Studies • No report card grade • Units: • Maps and Globes • Cardinal Directions • Neighborhoods • Landforms • Cultures • People at Work • Economics • America’s past/Government

  8. Science • Mrs. Finnegan-no report card grade • Hands on experiments/projects and group work • Units: • Scientific Process • Plants/Leaf Patterns • Water Cycle • Light/Sound • Properties of Matter • Resources • Solar System

  9. WIN • What I Need • Will start switching in October • Determine groups based on what the students needs are-possible groups: • Comprehension • Fluency • Phonics • Enrichment • Strategic Intervention • Combination

  10. Report Cards • Letter grades for Math and Language Arts are given starting in the first marking period • PA Core Standards 4, 3, 2, 1 scoring scale • There have been some changes to report cards so make sure to view them carefully • Viewed online

Classroom Management • No Monkeyin’ Around-assignment book for how your child’s day was • Oops Slips • At the end of each month any child who hasn’t moved their banana will get to shop in my behavior catalog • Group behavior-marbles are given to each table • Class behavior-marbles are given to entire class-goal changes every month • School wide behavior-Looking for Great Behavior–Bucket fillers

  12. Top Banana • Star of the Week chosen every Friday • Student will bring home a checklist that lets you know what they should bring to school-pictures • This student will get to pick their job for the week • Gets to pick from the behavior catalog each day • Computer time

Assignment Books • This year students will write their daily assignments in their assignment books • We will also write notes letting you know of important events-please also check my website or school website • At the end of the day I will initial the page. • Colored dot letting you know how your child’s day went • Please review daily and sign

Home Folder • Has to come to school everyday along with assignment book • Please check daily for important papers-Math tests will be sent in these folders • Remove all papers that are on Leave at home side • If folder rips or breaks you are more than welcome to supply your child with another one and I will label it accordingly

Homework • Homework should be meaningful and not meant to frustrate students. • Your child should be able to do his/her homework in approximately 20 minutes of uninterrupted work time with limited help from you. *If it is taking longer then please contact me. • Have your child check his/her work. • Have your child read a book or practice math facts if they finish early • Continued missed assignments will result in your child completing them during recess time

  16. Test Folders • Will come home as needed • If the folder is not returned then I can’t put new assessments in • *Math tests will be in Home folders

  17. Volunteers • Mystery Readers and party helpers only need notarized affidavit • Field trips and weekly volunteers need child abuse clearance, criminal history report, and notarized affidavit

  18. Scholastic Book Orders • Every month I will post a due date on the scholastic website. • Orders are done online • Enter the code FPNBY • You can pay by credit card • If you don’t feel comfortable or are unable to order online please let me know and I will send home forms

Other Information… • Snack-working snack daily except for Wed.-No peanut products please • Birthdays-Due to the increase in food sensitivity and allergies, we are no longer going to allow food birthday treats in our classrooms at Shoemaker. If you are interested, you may send in non-edible "treats" for your child's class on his or her birthday. • Website-check for upcoming events, bi-weekly newsletters, and any information that was discussed tonight • *sign up for email blast and newsletter • HAC-report cards are online • Lunch changes-no sandwhiches-1 fruit and 2 veggies • Bottle caps-each child needs at least 70 for Open House

  20. Continued • Absences-I will send home whatever work your child missed when they return. If you would like the work to go home with someone please email me that day. Fill out excused absence card or send in a note the day your child returns • Vacations-need to fill out vacation form from the office-please let me know in advance if you would like work sent home • If you are bringing your child to school please make sure they are here by 8:55. Announcements start at 9:00 and our Language Arts time starts right at 9:05

  21. Communication • Communication is key for success-let’s work as partners • Best way to contact me is through email aschneck@eastpennsd.org, or phone (610)965-1626 x 33125 • You can send a note in your child’s folder just make sure they know it is there

  22. About Me • This is my 7th year at Shoemaker • I live in Emmaus with my husband Trevor, 3 yr. old daughter Peyton, and 2 yr. old Brady. We are expecting our third child in January. I will take maternity leave once the baby is born and return in April. • I earned my bachelors at Lycoming College and my masters from Wilkes University. • I love sports especially softball and help out with various age groups through the EYA.
