Contract Research Organizations Offering In Vitro Toxicity Testing

Standard in vitro toxicity testing utilizes a single organ cell model to identify mechanisms of toxicity and screen a large number of compounds for efficacy or toxicity relative to reference compounds. These data are then used to rank order compounds.

  1. Contract Research Organizations Offering In Vitro Toxicity Testing

  2. Toxicity testing is an essential activity for many organizations developing new products designed to be sold into consumer markets. Pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic, food additive, and medical device companies are just a few organizations that run extensive toxicity testing programs to ensure their products are safe for the general public.

  3. Companies operating toxicity testing programs often run in vivo studies (animal testing) and in vitro studies (cell or tissue-based testing). Because of increasing pressure from global regulatory organizations, negative press associated with animal studies, and the relatively low cost of in vitro models over traditional animal models, more and more companies are adding in vitro toxicity testing to their new product discovery pipeline. Due to the increasing demand for in vitro toxicity testing research services, a large number of new contract research organizations (CROs) have appeared over the last five to ten years offering in vitro testing services.

  4. 1. Iontox:

  5. IONTOX is a biotechnology company established in 2014. IONTOX provides a number ofin vitro toxicology services and also has a propeariatry in vitro integrated organ model. IONTOX serves a global client base in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, tobacco, medical device, and food additive industries. Through the company’s founder James McKim, Ph.D., D.A.B.T. IONTOX has a connection to one of the first CROs exclusively offering in vitro toxicity testing as a service, CeeTox, which was also founded by Dr. McKim in the early 2000s.

  6. 2. Covance: Covance is one of the world’s largest CROs. They provide a number of contract research services to the drug, medical device, crop protection, and chemical industries. The company was incorporated in 1996 and headquartered in New Jersey. Worldwide the company has over 65,000+ employees and provides a number of in vitro assessments.

  7. 3. Eurofins Founded in 1987, Eurofins provides testing and support services to the pharmaceutical, food, environmental, and consumer products industries. They provide a number of cellular assay services, in vitro pharmacology profiling, and ADME-toxicity. Eurofins has a large network of over 900 independent companies in over 50 countries and is committed to providing quality science.

  8. 4. Charles River: Charles River Laboratories inc. is a contract research organization providing numerous preclinical and clinical laboratory services for drug discovery. Charles River Laboratories was founded in 1947 and has since grown to be another one of the largest CROs supporting the pharmaceutical industry.
