  2. history • Islam began in Mecca, Arabia and was created by the prophet Muhammad. • Muslims believe that Islam has always existed but place a beginning date at the migration of Muhammad 14000 years ago. It was more practical to date the beginning here. • People who follow Islam are known as Muslims. • Muslims believe there is only one God, Allah. Allah is the Arabic word for god. • Islam is the 2nd largest religion in the world. It has over 1 billion followers. • 2001 census showed that in the UK there was 1,591,000 Muslims that 2.7% of the population. • Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets to show mankind how to live according to his law.

  3. History continued • The prophets of Allah are believed to be Jesus, Moses and Abraham. Muhammad is believed to be the final prophet. • The Islamic holy book is the Qur’an and the Sunnah. • Muslims believe the Sunnah is the practical example of the prophet Mohammed. This includes the five pillars of Islam.

  4. The 5 pillars of Islam • Declaration of faith • Praying five times a day • Giving money to charity • Fasting • A pilgrimage to Mecca, at least once in a life time

Beliefs • Belief in Allah • Belief in Angels • Belief in the Holy books • Belief in the prophets • Belief in judgement day- When all humans’ lives are assessed to decide whether they go to heaven or hell. • Belief in Predestination – Allah knows all that happens, but Muslims still believe in free will.

  6. Allah • Allah Is eternal, omniscience and omnipotent • Allah has always existed • Allah knows everything • Allah can do anything

  7. Allah • Muslims believe a believer of Allah can approach Allah by praying or reciting the Qur’an. • Muslims believe that there is only one god; Allah has no children, parents or partners. Allah was not created by a being. There are no other gods superior or lesser.
