  1. Liberalism and the Enlightenment How did the ideals of European Enlightenment effect Americans’ view of government? Did America have her own Enlightenment thinkers?

Enlightenment • John Locke • Main purpose of government to protect life, liberty and property – Natural Rights • Rousseau • Social Contract – people give up some rights to protect natural rights • When the government usurps its power – people have the right to overthrow that government • Montesquieu • Separation of powers, system of checks and balances

Great Awakening of the 1740’s • George Whitefield • Religious emotionalism – not a focus on study but stories • Itinerant clergy • “God help us to forget party names and become Christians in deed and thought” • Preaching for the masses • Jonathan Edwards • Focused on how sinners would be condemned to hell • Caused the suicide of a member of the church • Dismissed End of fervor of the Great Awakening

Schools of Higher Learning • Most were established as Religious schools to teach and train clergy • Some were established after the Great Awakening and not as a training ground for clergy • Harvard and Yale – Puritans • Princeton, Brown, Rutgers and Dartmouth as a result of the Great Awakening • Columbia and University of Pennsylvania – Law, Medicine, Philosophy (other older schools followed
