  2. Israel was oppressed by Philistines • Goliath tormented them daily, blaspheming God • David, son of Jesse, came to inquire of hisbrothers and heard Goliath David and Goliath – 1 Sam. 17

  3. David was angered and tried to rally the people • He asked, “Is there not a cause” and challenged them to trust in God! • David volunteered to face Goliath David and Goliath – 1 Sam. 17

  4. With a sling and 5 smooth stones he rushed at Goliath “in the name of the Lord of hosts” saying, “the battle is the Lord’s” • With one stone he killed Goliath • The people were rallied and fought back the Philistines David and Goliath – 1 Sam. 17

  5. He saw God blasphemed and it angered him • He was not afraid! Phil. 1:27-28, 2 Cor. 13:5 • He trusted God – Prov. 3:5 David’s Cause

  6. Is There Not a Cause? • Ungodliness is all around us!Cf. “The new normal” • Is there not a cause? • To speak up for what is right? • Change must begin with us To fight for God in our Society

  7. Is There Not a Cause? • The Bible and activism • Very little (if any); NO place for such in the church! • BUT, godly men did stand up for what is right!Peter - Acts 5:29, Paul - 24:25, 26:24-28, cf. Phil. 4:22 To fight for God in our Society

  8. Is There Not a Cause? • Be an example • 1 Pet. 2:11-12 • 1 Pet. 3:15-16 • Phil. 2:14-15 • No better way to change society than one person at a time! To fight for God in our Society

  9. Is There Not a Cause? • Engage society for the better • Gal. 6:10 – as we have opportunity, do good to all • Making society better is “good” • BUT we must maintain godly qualities – honesty, humility, no “bully tactics”, respect cf. 1 Pet. 2:13-17 To fight for God in our Society

  10. Is There Not a Cause? • Pray for our leaders • 1 Tim. 2:1-4 – Why? That all men may come to the truth! • There IS a cause. Will we stand up and fight. To fight for God in our Society

  11. Is There Not a Cause? • Rom. 3:23 • Society has an impact on what we do (i.e. ungodliness around us can influence us) • For some, the grip is a giant! • BUT, sin is still sin – Rom. 6:23, Lk. 13:3 To purge our lives of sin

  12. Is There Not a Cause? • Is there not a cause? • IF you want to go to heaven, you have to face your sins and take care of them! • Forgiveness – Acts 22:16,1 John 1:9 – as a Christian To purge our lives of sin

  13. Is There Not a Cause? • Remain faithful! • Rev. 2:10, 2 Pet. 2:20-22 Luke 9:62, etc. • The majority of scripture directed to the faithfulness of Christians To purge our lives of sin

  14. Is There Not a Cause? • Take measures • Avoid ungodliness – 2 Tim. 2:22, 1 Cor. 6:18 • Avoid the ungodly – Jas. 4:4, 2 Cor. 6:14, 17 • Be alert – 1 Pet. 5:8-9 To purge our lives of sin

  16. Is There Not a Cause? • The church has been compromised! • Her work, organization, message and worship have been modified – in the name of toleranceA problem of gigantic proportions To seek purity in the church
