  1. Predicting Products: Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

  2. Objective: • Today I will be able to: • Predict the products of reactions for single replacement, double replacement, decomposition, and synthesis reactions • Apply knowledge of chemical reactions to an exam review • Evaluation/Assessment: • Informal assessment: listening to group interactions as students complete the practice sheets • Formal Assessment: Analyze Student Responses as they complete the practice worksheets • Common Core Connection • Build Strong Content Knowledge • Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them • Use appropriate tools strategically • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  3. Lesson Sequence • Evaluate: Warm – Up • Explain: Predicting Products of Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions • Elaborate: Mixed Predicting Products Practice • Elaborate: Exam Review • Stations • Review Game • Evaluate: Exit Ticket

  4. Warm - Up • Predict the products of the following reactions: • Na + AlCl3 • KI + Na2SO4  • F2 + NaBr

  5. Objective • Today I will be able to: • Predict the products of reactions for single replacement, double replacement, decomposition, and synthesis reactions • Apply knowledge of chemical reactions to an exam review

  6. Homework • Begin Studying for Chemical Equations Exam • B-Day –Wednesday Febuary 26 • ***(Lab Tuesday Febuary 18)***

  7. Agenda • Warm-Up • Predicting Products of Synthesis and Decomposition Reaction Notes • Predicting Products Practice • Exam Review • Stations • Game • Exit Ticket

  8. Predicting Products of Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

  9. Synthesis Reactions • Elements or simple compounds are combined to form ONE product • Combine elements and criss-cross the charges • Examples • Cu(II) + S  CuS • 4 Na + O2 2 Na2O

  10. Decomposition Reactions • If TWO elements (binary compound) are present in the original compound, just break it apart into two elements • 2 HCl  H2 + Cl2

  11. Predicting Products Practice Complete the practice at your desk. Whatever you do not finish will become your HW.

  12. Exam Review Participate in the exam review activity to help you prepare for your upcoming exam. There are two parts to the review Stations Review Game

  13. Exam Review Stations Travel to the stations in the lab. Predict the products for the reactions. Be sure to balance the equations and use the solubility rules for double replacement reactions.

  14. Exam Review Game Everyone in the group must participate to play in the game. Follow the rules explained by Ms. Ose

  15. Question 1 • What are the 7 diatomic elements?

  16. Answer 1 • H N O F Cl Br I

  17. Question 2 • Which type of reaction requires the use of solubility rules?

  18. Answer 2 • Double Replacement

  19. Question 3 • What are the products of a combustion reaction?

  20. Answer 3 • Carbon Dioxide and Water

  21. Speed Round 1 Every group plays. First group to get the answer gets an extra basketball shot attempt.

  22. Predict the products • BaCl2 + Na2SO4 • Note: (Final answer must be balanced)

  23. Question 4 • In a double replacement reaction _______ switch with __________

  24. Answer 4 • Metals, Metals

  25. Question 5 • What is the generic equation for a single replacement reaction?

  26. Answer 5 • A + BC  AC + B

  27. Question 6 • How many products are formed in a synthesis reaction?

  28. Answer 6 • 1 product

  29. Question 7 • Given the following reactants: • Na + N2  • What is wrong with the following product? • NaN2

  30. Answer 7 • The charges were not criss-crossed • The answer is Na3N

  31. Speed Round 2 Every group plays. First group to get the answer gets an extra basketball shot attempt.

  32. Predict the products • Al + CuCl2 • Note: (Final answer must be balanced)

  33. Question 8 • What is wrong with the following equation? • BaCO3  Ba + C + O3

  34. Answer 8 • If there are more than 2 elements present in a decomposition reaction, they cannot all split apart • Correct Answer • BaCO3 BaO + CO2

  35. Speed Round 3 Every group plays. First group to get the answer gets an extra basketball shot attempt.

  36. Predict the products • PbSO4 • Note: (Final answer must be balanced)

  37. Question 9 • What is wrong with the following equation? • KClO3 K2O + ClO2

  38. Answer 9 • If a halogen is present, the halogen and the metal stick together • The equation should be: • 2KClO32 KCl +3 O2

  39. Question 10 • What is wrong with the following single replacement reaction? • Ca + PbSO4 CaPb + SO4

  40. Answer 10 • The metal does not combine with the metal, they need to switch places. • Correct Answer: • Ca + PbSO4 CaSO4 + Pb

  41. Question 11 • What is wrong with the following equation: • HCl + NaOH  HCl (aq) + HOH (aq)

  42. Answer 11 • HOH is not an aqueous compound, it is a liquid.

  43. Question 12 • What is wrong with the following reaction? • C2H4 + O2 C2O2 + H4

  44. Answer 12 • This is a combustion reaction. The products should be carbon dioxide not water

  45. Speed Round 4 Every group plays. First group to get the answer gets an extra basketball shot attempt.

  46. Predict the products • Ca + I2 • Note: (Final answer must be balanced)

  47. Speed Round 5 Every group plays. First group to get the answer gets an extra basketball shot attempt.
