The School Resource OfficerA Brief History • The School Resource Officer was introduced at D-Y High School in 1987 • Detective Steven Xiarhos, now Deputy Chief of Police • The first SRO was assigned to Mattacheese in 1994 • The SRO was assigned 2 half days a week • SRO Nick Pasquarosa – still serving at D-Y High School • The other three days were spent at D-Y High School • MMS SRO Unit closed in 1996 due to budget shortfalls. • The MMS SRO was restored in 2003 • Federally funded full time position. • Veteran Officer Bill Coughlan served for 5 years • The Police Service Office was closed in 2008 due to another budget shortfall. • 2011 D-Y Superintendant Carol Woodbury & Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson restore the MMS SRO. • Fulltime • Officer Sean Brewer assumes the post in August.

The School Resource OfficerLaw Enforcement • The SRO is a Yarmouth Police Officer whose broad authority is not limited to Mattacheese • The SRO is responsible for all law enforcement activities on the MMS campus • Criminal investigation • Summons • Arrest • Traffic and vehicle enforcement • Emergency management coordination and training

  10. The School Resource OfficerLaw Enforcement Cardinal Offenses Strictest enforcement option is likely to be exercised in cases of • Drugs • Violence • Weapons

The School Resource OfficerSpecialized Counseling • While the SRO is not a certified counselor or therapist many years of experience dealing with people in crisis, along with the specialized training and knowledge of the criminal justice system makes the SRO one more resource available to students and staff to help solve complicated problems. • The officer often meets privately with students. • To assist with all types of issues and answer questions. • Help with problems at school or at home.

  12. The School Resource OfficerEducation ~ Instructional Support The School Resource Officer’s specialized training and experience is often used to enhance classroom instruction on various topics. The SRO will regularly: • Appear as a classroom guest speaker. • Classes are given on a variety of subjects. • Help students with individual research projects. • Provide teachers with instructional material and other types of support.

The School Resource OfficerMore When the School Resource Officer is not actively working in one of the three major areas of focus he will be working on prevention, intervention and planning activities. • Student supervision in the cafeteria, hallways and certain after school events. • Supporting the administration, guidance and counseling staff and social worker with problem solving. • Direct and indirect assistance. • Advising on police matters and court proceedings.
