  1. 5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 11/22/13 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Writing This week in writing we shared our first published pieces. We also began some grammar lessons which will help us improve our writing as we move on to persuasive writing. Your child should be able to tell you the difference between a simple, compound, and complex sentence! (L.5.3a) Science This week in our Too Good for Drugs unit we discussed the dangers of smoking, alcoholism and gateway drugs. I hope that these lessons have sparked some good conversation in your homes! We are finishing up the unit this week and an essay will be assigned next week. The essay will be due Dec. 4th. Hopefully students can get a jump start on the work over the Thanksgiving break.(SL.5.1C, SL.5.1D) Social Studies Our “Problem Solving Work Groups “are in full swing ,as they came to a consensus on their individual responsibilities (Historian, Advertiser, Graphic Artist, and Salesperson) Then the Historians lead their individual groups in gathering information about their colony ,by using “Hand Summary” notes. And the groups finished the week with the Advertiser taking over, whose responsibility it was to come up with a slogan and catchy statements to convince Europeans to settle in their colony. (RL.5.1, Sl.5.1, W.5.4, W.5.10 ) Math Fractions and Mixed Numbers is where it is at in math this week! We dove in head first into Chapter 3! Our work this week centered around ‘divisibility rules and adding unlike fractions’ (5.NF.1). This week in addition to taking traditional notes we worked with math foldables, take a moment to ask your child to explain what we did and how we will use them to study!!!
