  1. Literary Analysis Essay Writing Persuasively about Literature

  2. A literary analysis is an essay in which you make a statement about a piece of literature and support your opinion using evidence from the text  quotes are best. • When writing a literary analysis, assume that the reader has already read the text (you don’t need to summarize). • An essay is by definition your opinion, so there’s no need to use lots of personal pronouns (I think . . . I believe . . . I found . . . ) What is a literary analysis?

  3. The main goal of your introductory paragraph is to introduce the subject of your essay and state your opinion about it (your thesis). • A good thesis: • States a clear opinion • Is arguable • Is specific Introductory Paragraph

  4. (Bad) I think the message of the play is about love, life and mistaken identities. • (Good) The main message of the play is that love makes us crazy, but in the end it’s worth the trouble. Example Thesis Statements

  5. The purpose of your support paragraph is to . . . support your thesis. • The first sentence of a support paragraph should be your topic sentence. • A good topic sentence • Introduces the topic of the paragraph • Connects the evidence back to the thesis. Support Paragraphs

  6. A good conclusion wraps up what you have said in the support paragraphs and makes a connection to the world.  It answers the question “So what?” • The form of your conclusion should mirror the form of your introduction. Conclusion
