  3. EFFECTIVE MANAGERS… “Effective managers manage themselves and the people they work with so that both the ministry and the people profit from their presence.” -Blanchard and Johnson

  4. LEADERSHIP IS… “Leadership is any influence any person has on an individual or group to meet its needs or goals for the glory of God.” -Andrew Le Peau

  5. CHRISTIAN LEADERS ARE... “Christian leaders are men and women with the necessary gifts willing to bemolded by God into leaders, despite their shortcomings, weaknesses and deficiencies.” -Le Roy Eims

  7. A LEADER IS A DREAMER! • ASK GOD FOR A VISION FOR YOUR MINISTRY • What does He want it to become? • What do you want it to become? • COMMUNICATE YOUR VISION • Pastor (s) • Single adult leaders • Single adults • ENCOURAGE SUPPORT THROUGH PRAYER AND PARTICIPATION

  8. A LEADER IS A DELEGATOR • ALLOW PEOPLE TO OWN THE MINISTRY • They must help create and “buy into” the vision! • They will support what they help to create! • They need to run the ministry! • You don’t need to make all the decisions!

  9. A LEADER IS A DELEGATOR • GIVE RESPONSIBILITY AWAY • Personal growth • Personal joy • Personal feeling of contribution • Retaining of people • Share the work • Eliminate burnout

  10. A LEADER IS A DELEGATOR • GIVE AUTHORITY AWAY • Give it-Responsibility without authority is puppetry! • Teach it-Help leaders accept it graciously and handle it wisely! • Model it-Help leaders use authority humbly by modeling it yourself!

  11. A LEADER IS A DELEGATOR • ASK PEOPLE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE • It needs to exist • Learn to be comfortable with it • Help your leaders to be comfortable with it • Teach/model the freedom to fail

  12. A LEADER IS A DISCIPLER • BE A PEOPLE-BUILDER • Meet with leaders individually • Train • Encourage/affirm • Communicate vision • Problem-solve • Build relationships • Model transparency/vulnerability

  15. BUILDING LEADERSHIPASK/ANSWER… • What does God want us to do? • What is our mission/purpose? (Outreach-Discipleship-Social/Fellowship-Discussion- Education-Combination of these) • What agegroup are we targeting? • 18-24, 18-29, 20’s & 30’s - Young adults • 30+, 55+ - Single & single-again adults • What need/interestgroup are we targeting? • Single-Parent Families, Divorce Care, Widowed

BUILDING LEADERSHIP ASK/ANSWER • What ministries do we want to begin? • What type of leader (s) do we need? • What responsibilities would they have? • What is the time frame? • What resources do we need to obtain? • What training do the leader (s) need? • Who has leadership potential? (Desires-Skills-Experience-Vision-Good Attitude) • When can I meet with them?

  17. Reasons for Involving People • Joy/happiness • Personal growth • People are retained • Workload is shared • Feeling of importance • Feeling of contribution • Helps eliminate burnout • Strengthens the ministry • Gives ownership

FEMALES • Generally, the older the group, the more important and difficult it is to find male leadership. • ISSUES: • Attracting both genders • Retaining both genders • Egos of men • Perceived authority-men vs. women • Use men in front as much as possible • Organizational ability-men vs. women

  22. MARRIED VS. SINGLE • Generally… • The younger the age group, the more accepting people are of married couples in leadership. • The older the age group, the more accepting people are of remarried couples in leadership.

  23. MARRIED VS. SINGLE • Leadership should be predominantly single adults because of: • Experience • Flexibility of time • Understanding of issues • Respect of peers • Example of life, growth, maturity • Identity of ministry

  24. When Recruiting Leaders… FOUR TYPES OF PEOPLE: • VDP-Very drainable people • VNP-Very neutral people • VTP-Very trainable people • VIP-Very important people

RECRUITING LEADERS • Know what you are looking for • Seek God for guidance/provision • Look for strengths in people • Develop relationships with potential leaders before recruiting/appointing • Ask to meet with a person (tell purpose) • Ask to serve in a specific ministry • Ask to serve for a specific time • Ask for names of other potential leaders

  26. BASIC STRENGTHS NEEDED IN A LEADER • Committed to Christ • Personable • Dependable • Likeable • Faithful • Growing • Balanced life • Desire to serve • Well-groomed

  27. OTHER STRENGTHS NEEDED IN A LEADER • Action-oriented • Able to accept authority • Able to delegate • Creative • Enthusiastic • Decisive • Desire to achieve • Patient • Persistent • Pray-er

  29. TRAINING LEADERS • Meet regularly with key leaders • Meet regularly with the leadership team • Give reading assignments • Teach & discuss leadership principles • Model transparency & vulnerability • Leadership retreat • Leadership class

MOTIVATING LEADERS • Thank them privately and publicly • Encourage them privately and publicly • Take interest in them personally • Encourage creativity • Correct them privately • Give incentives • Model loyalty • Model a good work ethic • Model enthusiasm/positive outlook • Model faith, trust, dependence on God

  31. LOYALTY TO THE MINISTRY! FOUR TYPES OF BONES: • WISHBONES- ”I wish I had…” • JAWBONES- ”I’ll help you…”(but never does) • KNUCKLEBONES- “If I was in charge…” • BACKBONES-”I’ll help you…” (and does)

  32. Realities of Leadership • The job is never done • Expect energy level drain • Expect to give and get emotional strokes • People may consider you an authority • Very few people “fit together” well • Expect to have some fun times • Expect to have some tough times

  33. Cause of problems in leadership • Personality problems being shared • Lack of planning • Lack of communication • Labeling people • Not following chain of command • Cynicism • Judgmental-ism • Rumors • Lack of prayer • Disobedience to God
