  1. Optimizing Space Utilization Menomonie

  2. More Space is what we need • First step in a building program • To justify the need for more space and an expensive building program, you first need to show you are using your current space to the best advantage. • Dealing with changes to space made over time • New technologies added • New collections created • Nobody has ever weeded • After many years the library is no longer user friendly

  3. Ideas, ideas, ideas • Just add more space • Is it about the stuff or is it about people? • You think you know what you need but how do you get it out of the space you have • We wanted more space for children’s services and a more defined space for teens. • Open space.

  4. Take what you can get • Be realistic about space gains

  5. Get Help • Outside perspective • Gather data • Make the calculations • Bring a knowledge of libraries • Make the sell • Vendors • Add valuable input on organization, functionality and durability • Help coordinate • Important partners

  6. Are staff involved

  7. A useful thing to do • A space utilization study could be part of a space needs assessment and building program. • The study can help demonstrate a need for space. • The study may find that there are no changes to be made that will gain significant additional space.
