הסניטרים של הטבע Nature’s sanitarians נשרים משחרים אחר מזון בדאייה, תוך שמירה על קשר עין זה עם זה ממרחק של עשרות קילומטרים וסורקים אחר פגרים שהם מזונם. לכן הם נקראים "הסניטרים של הטבע". Foraging while soaring, keeping eye contact with each other for dozens of km, they search for carcasses & clean the environment from dead animals, “serving” as Nature’s sanitarians.

אוכלוסיית הנשרים בישראלThe Griffon Vulture population in Israel אוכלוסיית הנשרים בישראל נמצאת בירידה מדאיגה: מכ-400 פרטים בשנת 2001 לכ-220 בשנת 2009. The Griffon Vulture population is facing a worrisome decline: from 400 individuals in 2001 to merely 220 in 2009.

What is threatening vultures? • הרעלות משניות מאכילת בע"ח שמתו מרעלים • הרעלות עופרת מאכילת חיות שנורו ע"י ציידים • ירי • התחשמלות או התנגשות בקווי חשמל • הפרעות מטיילים, הפרעות כלי טיס • תרופות וכימיקלים במזון (חיות משק האדם) • תמותת בוגרים שגורמת לכישלונות רבייה, במיוחד בשמורת גמלא וצפון הארץ. • Secondary poisoning • Lead poisoning • Persecution • Electrocution & colliding with power lines • Disturbances by avian activity & hikers • Drugs & chemicals in their food (livestock) • Adults mortality at breeding, causes high losses of eggs and nestlings (especially at Gamla N.R. & northern Israel)

הצלת דור העתיד בגמלא Saving Gamla’s future generation בעונת קינון 2008 הוחלט ברשות הטבע והגנים להוציא חלק מהביצים מהקינים בשמורת גמלא ולהעבירן להדגרה מלאכותית על מנת להבטיח את בקיעת הגוזלים ולעודד את הזוג המקנן לייצר ביצה שניה. In 2008, Israel Nature and Parks Authority decided to take out part of the eggs from the nests at Gamla Nature Reserve and to incubate them artificially. This ensures hatching and inducing the breeding couple to lay a replacement egg.

גלישה אל הקן Rappelling to the nest The ranger rappels down to the nest, carefully taking the egg and placing it in a padded container. הגולש יורד אל הקן, אוסף בזהירות רבה את הביצה, ומכניס אותה למיכל מרופד.

הדגרה מלאכותית Artificial incubation הביצים מגיעות אל ידיהם הבטוחות של צוות גן החיות התנ"כי בירושלים, שם הן מודגרות במדגרה עם מערכת בקרה. The eggs arrive to the secure hands of the crew at the Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem, where they are incubated in well controlled incubators.

1 ו-2 הגוזל מואכל בעזרת כפפה עליה מולבש ראש נשר על מנת למנוע החתמה 3. גוזל בן כ-30 יום בשלב מתקדם יותר מועבר להמשך גידול במתקן מיוחד בחי-בר כרמל 1. The chick is fed with a special glove to avoid imprinting. 3. Chicks are transferred to Hai-Bar Carmel for rearing in a special facility. Here is a 30 days old chick. 2.

הגוזלים מועברים לכלוב האקלום בשמורת גמלא ברמת הגולן, ממנו ישוחררו בשנת חייהם השלישית The chicks are transferred to the acclimatization cage at Gamla nature reserve from where they will be released when they are three years old.

כל שנה מתבצעת לכידת נשרים לצורך סימונם לצרכי מעקב אחר שרידות של פרטים, הדמוגרפיה של האוכלוסייה וניטור ווטרינרי Every year, Griffon vultures are captured in order to mark them, so it will be possible to learn about the dynamics of the population and for veterinary monitoring.

נשר בתעופה מעל המצוק אחרי ששוחרר Flying above the cliff right after being released

שיתוף פעולה עם מדינות שכנות – נשר שבקע באי Cres בקרואטיה והגיע למכתש רמון בישראל. אחד מרבים מנשרי הבלקן הצעירים להם ישראל משמשת כאתר חריפה. International cooperation – a young Griffon Vulture which hatched on the island of Cres in Croatia made it all the way to Israel. One of many from the Balkan that spend the winter in Israel.

תחנות האכלהFeeding stations תחנות האכלה בדרום הארץ מופעלות ע"י רט"ג בסיוע מפעלי רותם אמפרט מקבוצת חברת כימיקלים לישראל. מטרתן: הבטחת מזון איכותי, נקי מרעלים, הרחק מסיכונים וביצוע סניטציה סביב ישובי אדם לשם מניעת התרבות מזיקים וצימצום נגע ההרעלות. A network of feeding stations is operated by the INPA in order to supply the vulture & other carrion eating birds available food, safe & free of chemicals, away from hazards & to facilitate sanitation that would reduce the over population by predators which induce mass poisoning.

מידע שנאסף בתחנות ההאכלה בדרום הארץ הנשר X01 זכר בוגר, נאסף כשהוא מורעל בעת שגידל גוזל בנחל עקב בנגב. הנשר, שהיה על סף מוות, שוקם בביה"ח לחיות בבר "לטבע נולד" www.latevanolad.org.il, ומיד לאחר שחרורו חזר לקינו, וגידל יחד עם זוגתו את הגוזל בהצלחה. הנשר צולם בתחנת ההאכלה בהר צרור בנגב. X01, a mature male, was poisoned in the Negev while raising a chick. The vulture was treated at the Israel Wildlife hospital, www.latevanolad.org.il, and right upon release went back to the nest to continue from where he left off. This picture was taken at a feeding station in the Negev.

J96שסומן באוקטובר 2007 במדבר יהודה, נצפה בתחנת ההאכלה בהר צרור בנגב בינואר 2008 J96, marked on October 2007 in the Judea Desert, was observed at a feeding station in the Negev (Tazror Mountain) in 2008.

לאחר הארוחה, בני הזוג עסוקים בחיזוק הקשר המונוגאמי ביניהם. הזפק של הפרט הימני מלא ביותר מ-1 ק"ג בשר After the meal, the couple are strengthening their monogamic relationship. The Vulture on the right has more than 1 Kg meat in its crop.

נשרים ועזניה שחורה ((Aegypius monachusGriffon Vultures with aEurasian Black Vulture עזנייה שחורה בולטת בגודלה בין שלושה נשרים צעירים. העזנייה נעלמה כמקנן מהארץ, אך מדי חורף מגיעים הנה פרטים בודדים הנצפים בתחנות ההאכלה יחד עם הנשרים. Eurasian Black Vulture (EBV) “shows” its size compared with three young Griffon vultures. The EBVis no longer nesting in Israel, however is observed occasionally at feeding stations.

רחם מדברי Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) הרחם שייך גם הוא לאוכלי הפגרים וגם הוא נפגע מאד מהרעלות. Egyptian Vultures belong to the scavengers, mainly feeding off carrion, also observed at the feeding station .
