Context • MPS – 89% students of color • 75% of teachers are white • Only 4% of teachers are male and of color • 80% of teachers are not adept in culturally responsive practices and 90% are not prepared to provide trauma informed care • Enrollments in teacher preparation programs are down 25% to 50% - national crisis • This leads to teacher shortage and retention challenges
M3 Grow Your Own Teacher Pipeline • High School Juniors and Seniors (95% students of color) • Started with 32 students in 1st year, 70 students in 2nd year • Two high schools 1st year; Four high schools 2nd year • Weekly meetings • Educators Rising Club at each high school • Students will earn up to 30 college credits (MATC/UWM) • College visits once a semester • Summer Experience (5 weeks with dedicated Mentor)
After High School • Students attend MATC with dedicated Advisor • 100% Pell Eligible • MATC Promise provides 2nd year of college for free • 3rd year transfers to UWM for 3rd and 4th year • Working with UW System to provide loan forgiveness program – loans are forgiven if graduate teaches 2 years in Milwaukee Public Schools • Working with legislative policymakers to created dedicated funding source for GYO program
