  3. Act I • It’s your first day in a new town. • Your job required that you transfer to Marion, Iowa. • Looking outside from your apartment, the city doesn’t look too bad in the morning light.

  4. With a nervous gulp, you check the time. • Work starts in 45 minutes. Luckily, you’re all ready to go. • You take one last look at your new apartment and smile before shutting the door to step outside.

  5. You step outside and take the keys out from your pocket. As you press the “unlock” button, you hear your car’s familiar “beep beep”. • As you step into the car, you think of all the new faces you’ll meet at work today. The idea of working in a new place fills you with nervous excitement.

  6. Later… • You step out of the car. You’ve arrived at your job. • A nondescript office building greets you. Orange autumn leaves fall all around you, covering the ground. • You take another nervous gulp and approach the clear glass door.

  7. As you take your first step inside, you see the receptionist. • She turns to greet you. “Hi,” she says. “You must be the new employee.” • You stammer a bit. “Y-yes, I am! Nice to meet you!”

  8. She brushes the hair out of her eyes. Her smile sends a jolt through you. • “Nice to meet you too!” she says cheerfully. “My name’s Marlene.” • She eyes you, a sudden devilish grin spreading across her face. “Say…” she begins. “I think I might recognize you.”

  9. “Yeah, you went to Stoneriver High School, right?” • “No way,” you say, shocked. “You’re that Marlene?” • She seems just as shocked as you are. “What are the chances!” • You think about it. What are the chances that you would not only work at the same company, but be transferred to the same city?

  10. Your conversation is interrupted when a figure bursts into the room. • A barrel-chested man with brown hair hands off a stack of papers to Marlene before noticing you. • “Well well,” he says, eyeing you up and down. “So, this is the new employee?”

  11. He extends a hand. “Name’s Tanner,” he says. • You accept the handshake. His grip is strong, but not painful. His hand feels warm. • “I expect you’ll be doing good work for us.”

  12. “We were just talking about how we went to the same high school,” Marlene says. • Tanner cocks his head and eyes you. “Hmm…” he says. “Come to think of it…didn’t you used to work at a coffee shop?” • “Y-yeah!” you respond. “But that was when I was going to technical college in Maine…w-wait, there’s no way…”

  13. He laughs heartily. “I used to work down in Maine on a project. I came into your shop every day. You really don’t remember me?” • “I kinda do,” you lie. You feel bad for not remembering his face.

  14. “Well, either way, we can catch up later.” he says, looking at his watch. “You’re on the clock, now.” • You both laugh, aware that the joke is in reference to the fact that you are a salaried worker and are, thus, not paid hourly and therefore not “on the clock” (a clever and ironic contradiction.) • You wave to the two and make your way to your workstation.

  15. You open the door to the cubicles and feel an impact from the other side. • Papers glide to the floor in a mess. An angry woman glares at you from the ground. • “You idiot!” she shouts. “Why don’t you watch where you’re going?”

  16. “Ah! I-I’m sorry!” you stammer. She collects the fallen papers and stands up. • “Don’t apologize to me!” she hisses, then looks you over. “Let me guess: you’re the new employee.” • “Y-yeah,” you say, scratching your head in embarrassment.

  17. She pauses. “Say…” she begins. • “Oh no,” you think to yourself. • “We’ve met before, haven’t we?” she insinuates, slyly. “Remember that project in Barcelona?”

  18. You gulp, suddenly remembering her presence at a business trip you went on a while ago. • “Y-yeah, I think I recognize you.” you admit timidly. “Your name was…Brooke, right?” • She doesn’t respond, and instead looks at you for a few more moments, judgments clearly forming in her mind. She wordlessly walks off with a smirk. • You can’t help but nervously wonder about her demeanor.

  19. Finally, you make it to your cubicle. You set your stuff down and breathe a sigh of relief. • You wonder who you’ve been stationed next to, and yet almost don’t want to look. • You steel your nerves, however, and look over the cubicle wall. • The man on the other side catches your gaze…and you instantly recognize each other.

  20. “Stan?!” you blurt out. • He looks back in shock. “Are you kidding me?” he laughs. • You both laugh and circle around the cubicle to hug each other. You break the embrace to size each other up. • “How’ve you been doing, man?” you ask. “I haven’t seen you since technical school!”

  21. “I’ve been doin’ pretty good.” he says. “After school ended, I kinda moved around a lot before I ended up here. This is the last place I thought I’d see you!” • “Yeah, it’s pretty bizarre,” you say. “I feel like I’ve already met just about everybody here!”

  22. The two of you catch up for a little while before you settle down in your cubicle and begin your work. • Over the course of the day, you can’t help but wonder about the consequences that brought you and all these people together again. • You had expected to arrive at your workplace meeting new people, and yet were mysteriously greeted with familiar faces from your past…

  23. Later... • You and your colleagues have finished your work for the day. You all walk outside to say your goodbyes and get in your cars to drive home. • Suddenly, you notice that your car is being towed! You seem to have parked in the wrong space!

  24. “Oh no!” you exclaim, running up to the tow truck driver. “My car! How am I going to get home?!” • Marlene speaks up. “I’m sure I could give you a ride home,” she says. • “Yeah, any one of us could give you a ride.” Tanner says. The four of them crowd around you expectantly.

  25. Who Will You Choose? Marlene Brooke Tanner Stan

  26. “It’s okay, guys,” you say to the others. “I’m going to go with Marlene.” • The two of you step into her car—it’s much nicer than your car, and smells like plastic and vinyl. • “So, whereabouts do you live?” she asks.

  27. You give her the directions and she nods in affirmation. She begins driving and the two of you are off. • “So,” she asks. “What’s been going on with you? You seem pretty different from back in high school.” • You look out the window. “Yeah, I guess I’ve changed a lot since then.” • She smiles. “Who hasn’t!” • “You certainly have,” you say, looking over at her. “You were the nerdiest girl at our school! Now you’re…” you struggle with the words. “…different.”

  28. She frowns a bit. “Yeah,” she sighs. “I was never one of the more popular kids at our school.” She turns to her attention toward you. “Not like you,” she says with a sardonic smile. • “What are you talking about?” you ask her. She rolls her eyes. “You were big shit back in the day!” she says. “You really don’t remember?” • You look away. “Not really,” you say. “I just remember…hanging out with my friends, I guess.” • “No way, you were a big deal at that school.” she responds. “I never would’ve imagined you in an office job.”

  29. “Either way, things are different now.” you say, looking down. You mumble into your lap, “Seasons change. People change.” • “’The sands of time whittle us down until we’re nothing,” she says. “’but each grain takes with it the essence of us.’” • “Where’d you hear that?” you ask. “It’s from a book I’m reading.” she responds. “Maybe I’ll let you borrow it sometime.” She smiles just as the sun hits her face.

  30. You arrive at your apartment building. She pulls up to the front gate and lets you out. • “Anyway, I’ll see you tomorrow.” She waves, smiles, and backs out of the entrance ramp. • You wave as she speeds away. You punch in the code and the gate swings open for you.

  31. As you settle in for the night, the faces of all the people you work with swim through your head… • Faces that you have, mysteriously, met before, in different places, at different times… • It’s almost like you were meant to be here…as if some force is realigning you with the path you were always meant to take…

  32. 1 Week Later... • You and your coworkers exit a meeting. You feel confident in your performance during the meeting, and you all made a lot of progress. • However, other things are on your mind. Tonight is a popular festival in midtown, and you’re looking forward to going.

  33. And yet, you have no one to go with! Who will you ask to the festival? Marlene Tanner Stan Brooke

  34. “Um, I guess I’ll ride with Brooke,” you say. • You see Brooke try to stifle a grin as she tells you, “Follow me.” • She leads you to her car and unlocks it. On the inside, it is incredibly clean.

  35. She starts the car. “Where am I headed?” she says darkly. • You tell her where you live. She pulls out of the parking lot and the two of you speed off. • A moment of silence passes. You try to pass the time by talking to her. “So, uh,” you begin. She cuts you off. • “I know what’s going on here,” she says, a wild smile on her face. • “W-what?” you respond. She looks over at you.

  36. “Please. I know your game.” she growls. “You expect me to believe it’s a coincidence you work with a bunch of people you just happen to have met before?” • “Listen, I’m just as confused as you are--” you try to explain. She cuts you off again. “Something’s going on here and I’m going to find out what.” • “Wait,” you respond. “Did you eavesdrop on my conversations with Marlene and Tanner?” She pauses for a moment, considering how to answer. “So, how’ve you been since Barcelona?”

  37. “You can’t change the subject like that!” you shout. She responds by smiling playfully and sticking her tongue out at you. “Y-you’re….really strange.” you mutter at her. She smiles a wide, uncharacteristically genuine smile. • “Please, I’m just trying to have a conversation.” she scoffs playfully. “C’mon, what’s your deal? I really do wanna know.” • “Well,” you begin. “I mostly moved around before I had this job. Then, after Barcelona, I was in the same spot until they moved me out here.” • “Hmm.” she says, seemingly unsatisfied with the response. You turn toward her. “What about you?” you ask. “What’s your deal?”

  38. She glares at you. Her face darkens for a moment, then goes blank as she calculates. • “I don’t think I want to tell you yet.” she says finally. “Anyway, we’re here.” • You look out the window, startled to find that she’s right. You step out of the car and stand at the front gate to your apartment building. • “Hey,” she shouts. You look back. “We’ll have plenty of time to talk. We’re coworkers now, right?” You stammer a bit, but before you can respond, she grins and waves at you before speeding away. • You punch in the code and the gate swings open for you.

  39. As you settle in for the night, the faces of all the people you work with swim through your head… • Faces that you have, mysteriously, met before, in different places, at different times… • It’s almost like you were meant to be here…as if some force is realigning you with the path you were always meant to take…

  40. 1 Week Later... • You and your coworkers exit a meeting. You feel confident in your performance during the meeting, and you all made a lot of progress. • However, other things are on your mind. Tonight is a popular festival in midtown, and you’re looking forward to going.

  41. And yet, you have no one to go with! Who will you ask to the festival? Marlene Tanner Stan Brooke

  42. “I think I’m gonna go with Tanner.” • Tanner smiles. “Well, alright.” He leads you over to his truck. You open the door and step up into the cab. • “Where we headed?” he asks you. You give him some directions. He starts up the engine and you’re off.

  43. “So,” Tanner begins. “They transferred you here from Maine?” • “Well, no, not really,” you respond. “To be honest, after college I moved around a lot…” • He nods and rests his head on his fist. “Hey, that’s alright. A lot of people go that route.” he says. “How did you feel about it?” • “It was alright,” you say. “I liked being able to see the country.”

  44. “Hmm…” he responds. “It’s a shame. I liked seeing you at that coffee shop every day.” • Your face reddens. You try to hide it from him. • “A-anyway,” you continue, trying to change the subject. “I work here now.” You aren’t sure of what to say. • “Do you like it here so far?” he asks. You look out the window. “Yeah,” you say. “It’s really nice. Very peaceful.”

  45. He looks out the window, nodding. “Yeah,” he agrees. “It is peaceful.” • You can’t help but stare as he gazes wistfully out into the horizon. His hair shakes a bit from the wind coming in through the window. • He catches your gaze. You look away and scramble for something to talk about, blushing. “U-uh, what did you do before this job?” • He smiles warmly. “I would tell you,” he begins.

  46. “…but we’re here.” • You look out the window and are almost startled to see your apartment building. “Oh, right,” you say, stepping out of the truck. • You shut the door and turn toward the building’s front gate. Behind you, you hear the truck’s window roll down. • “Hey,” Tanner calls to you. You turn around. • “See you tomorrow,” he says with a slight wink. The truck speeds off and you’re left blushing in front of your apartment building.

  47. As you settle in for the night, the faces of all the people you work with swim through your head… • Faces that you have, mysteriously, met before, in different places, at different times… • It’s almost like you were meant to be here…as if some force is realigning you with the path you were always meant to take…

  48. 1 Week Later... • You and your coworkers exit a meeting. You feel confident in your performance during the meeting, and you all made a lot of progress. • However, other things are on your mind. Tonight is a popular festival in midtown, and you’re looking forward to going.

  49. And yet, you have no one to go with! Who will you ask to the festival? Marlene Tanner Stan Brooke

  50. “I’ll ride with Sam,” you say. • Sam smiles. “Great!” he says. “My car’s right over there.” • You both get into the car. It’s much nicer than the one he had back in school. • You give him directions to your apartment and the two of you are off.
