General Admission Requirements for University in Ontario • High School Diploma • all credit requirements met – see information in your package • 40 hours of Community Service • Literacy Test • Grade 12 Academic English (ENG4U) • 5 additional 12U/12M courses • Certain programs may require additional Grade 12 University prerequisite courses as well as minimum averages

General Admission Requirements for College in Ontario • High School Diploma • all credit requirements met – see information in your package • 40 hours of Community Service • Literacy Test • Highly Competitive Programs often have specific prerequisite courses at the Grade 11 & 12 level. • Bachelor Degree programs offered at colleges will still require U or M level courses at the Gr. 12 level.

  6. Consider the College Option • Applied degrees, collaborative partnerships with universities • College Diploma/Certificate • One year foundation year courses • Post graduate programmes

U.S. & Beyond • Planning to attend Post-Secondary education in the U.S. & beyond will require additional research • Your Grade 11 year is the time to start taking SAT/ACTs, investigating schools of interest and visiting • LPCI Guidance deadline for U.S. applications is December 1 (but you should give us a heads up well before this) – this allows sufficient time to process applications. • www.collegeboard.org provides a clearing house of information about SAT test dates, colleges and universities in the U.S. as well as the application system

  9. Other Options • GAP year • Part-time college and university combined with work, travel or volunteer opportunities • Pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship placements • Direct entry to the workplace • Opportunities with the Canadian Forces • Volunteer engagement

The role of the student • Research • Attend college and university presentations • Visit the Ontario Universities Fair – late September • Visit the Ontario College Information Fair – in October • Consult myblueprint.ca/tdsb and use the Post-Secondary Planner • Consult electronicinfo.ca • Consult university websites for program or institution specific deadlines • Consult ontariocolleges.ca or college websites for college admissions requirements • University/college calendars in guidance office • Sign up for and Read Grad e-mail from Guidance Office • Attend classes, submit assignments on time, seek extra help, communicate with teachers • Be informed of deadlines for scholarships, financial awards • Visit open houses and attend campus events • Sign up for college and university e-mailings

The role of Guidance at LPCI • Host university and college visits • Fall visits to LP & Winter information evening • Provide support throughout the application process • present fall information session for all graduating students • Serve as a reference centre • Post secondary materials for research and planning • Support scholarship applications • Transmit marks • The Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) • The Ontario College Application Services (OCAS)

The role of the family • Encourage students to… • be aware of and meet deadlines • have a balanced lifestyle of school, family and social involvement • take an active and responsible role in planning for their own future • Support students • visit campuses • attend information sessions • make wise decisions that meet students’ personal needs • actively listen with an open mind when discussing possible choices • foster resilience so that students develop skills that help them cope with the challenges they will encounter

How to Apply to University • Go to Ontario University Application Centre (www.ouac.on.ca) • Out of Province OUAC links with the following institutions: Bishop’s, UBC, Concordia, Dalhousie, McGill, Simon Fraser and U. Victoria. You must still apply directly to these institutions • Students apply on-line between early December and early January • PIN codes are distributed by Guidance • Use the PIN to set up an account with the OUAC • Guidance will offer assemblies and information sessions to students to assist them in understanding the application process • Deadline mid-January 2013 • Modifications to your choices may be made after this date

  14. How to Apply to College • Students apply online to another application clearinghouse in January. OCAS is the Ontario College Application Service (www.ontariocolleges.ca) • Feb. 1st deadline for equal consideration
