  1. Aquatic Biomes/Communities By Penny Knox Pierce County Middle School and Jessie Moreau Gwinnett County Public Schools

  2. 7th Grade Life ScienceHigh School Biology S7L4e: Describe the characteristics of Earth’s major terrestrial biomes (i.e., tropical rain forest, savanna, temperate , desert, taiga, tundra, and mountain) and aquatic communities (i.e., freshwater, estuaries, and marine) SB4a: Investigate the relationships among organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and biomes.

  3. Freshwater Biome

  4. What is a freshwater biome? • Mountain streams—running water down the mountain • Cold, clear water • Rapidly flowing water

  5. What is a freshwater biome? • Rivers • Streams merge together to create rivers

  6. What is a freshwater biome? • Green algae grows • Fish, turtles, frogs, insects live here

  7. What is a freshwater biome? • Ponds & lakes—still water • Green algae & phytoplankton • Insects, snakes, fish, turtles, and frogs live here

  8. Marine biome

  9. What is a marine biome? • Saltwater biome • Largest biome on Earth

  10. What is a marine biome? • Oceans • Seas

  11. What is a marine biome? Coastal Ocean • Rocky & sandy shores/beaches • Seaweed/Kelp • Crabs & clams

  12. What is a marine biome? Open Ocean • Water is colder than the coastal ocean • Many kinds of fish and aquatic mammals

  13. What is a marine biome? Deep Sea • Much colder & darker than the upper ocean • Plankton, sponges, starfish

  14. What is a marine biome? Abyssal Zone • Extremely cold • No sunlight – totally dark • Glow in the dark fish and marine creatures

  15. What is a marine biome? Coral Reef • Warm, shallow water • Barriers along continents • Coral, sea stars, octopus

  16. Estuary biome

  17. What is an estuary? • Where the fresh water of a river meets the saltwater of the ocean

  18. What is an estuary? • Change between freshwater biome and marine biome • Marshes • Wetlands

  19. What is an estuary? • Nurseries of the sea • Coastal Rivers

  20. What animals live in an estuary? • Seagulls • Crabs • Turtles • Fish
