  1. On page 25 in your notebook: Write the following question and write the answer to it What would you want to include in the English Bill of Rights? Create a 2-door foldable by doing a hamburger fold, pinching the ends, and open it, then fold the ends to the middle to create 2 doors.

  2. English Bill of Rights • Justified the Glorious Revolution by explaining the political and religious crimes of the ousted James II • Established a government in which the power of the king was checked and balanced

Inside Left Inside Right • King had overstepped the limits of his power • Violated the Rule of Law • Levied taxes without consent of Parliament • English Bill of Rights (EBR) intended to provide a lasting remedy for the actions of a tyrant • EBR restated the: • Rule of Law • Parliamentary Supremacy • Government by contract and consent • Balance of Power • Included such traditional rights as • Trial by Jury • No cruel and unusual punishment • The right to bear arms….for Protestants • EBR did NOT include: • Individual rights such as free speech or religion

We’ve seen a progression of understanding, expectations, and conflict resolution • From the Magna Carta in 1215, to the P of R is 1628, to the EBR in 1689 • British citizens had come to embrace that they had certain rights that cannot be denied • The Magna Carta, Petition of Right and English Bill of Rights are called the British Constitution
