  1. OBJECTIVE 1/21/14 TLW, discern the effects of cyclical patterns and movements of the Earth and moon in relation to the Sun, by becoming familiar with terminology necessary in comprehending content standards of TEKS 8.7A, 8.7B, and 8.7C with 100%participation.

  2. WARM UP: UNIT 9 UNPACKING • 8.7A Model and illustrate how the tilted Earth rotates on its axis, causing day and night, and revolves around the sun causing changes in seasons. • 8.7B demonstrate and predict the sequence of events in the lunar cycle. • 8.7C relate the position of the Moon and Sun to their effects on ocean tides.

  3. Rotational Axis • - an imaginary line through the center of Earth that connects the North Pole to the South Pole.Earth rotates about its axis once every 24 hours.Earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees.

  4. AXIS • an imaginary line around which an object rotates.Earth’s axis runs from the North Pole to the South Pole

  5. WINTER SOLSTICE • one of the two days of the year on which the sun reaches its greatest apparent distance north or south; the shortest day of the year, which occurs around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere

  6. REVOLVE • to move around a central point

  7. SUMMER SOLSTICE • one of the two days of the year on which the sun reaches its greatest apparent distance north or south; the longest day of the year, which occurs around June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21 in the Southern Hemisphere

  8. ROTATE • to spin on an axis.

  9. AUTUMNAL EQUINOX • one of the two days of the year in which the length of the day is equal to the length of the night. On the equinoxes, neither the Northern Hemisphere nor the Southern Hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the Sun. The fall equinox occurs around September 22.

  10. VERNAL EQUINOX • one of the two days of the year in which the length of the day is equal to the length of the night. On the equinoxes, neither the Northern Hemisphere nor the Southern Hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the Sun.The spring equinox occurs around March 21

  11. NEAP TIDE • A tide that occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth form a right angle during first quarter and third quarter moon phases

  12. SPRING TIDE • Spring tides occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned (in a line) during the new moon or full moon phases

  13. HIGH TIDE • maximum height reached by a rising tide.“High tide” can also refer to the time at which high tide occurs

  14. LOW TIDE • the minimum height of a falling tide. “Low tide” can also refer to the time at which low tide occurs

  15. GRAVITATIONAL ATTRACTION • the force of attraction between all objects in the universe. Gravity is only important when at least one of the objects is very large, like the Earth, Sun, or Moon.

  16. ECLIPSE • The partial or complete obscuring, relative to a designated observer, of one celestial body by another.

  17. WAXING GIBBOUS • phase of the Moon between the first quarter and the full moon, wherein more than half of the Moon is illuminated (lit up)

  18. WANING GIBBOUS • - phase of the Moon between the full moon and the third quarter, wherein more than half of the Moon is illuminated

  19. WAXING CRESCENT • phase of the Moon between the new moon and first quarter, wherein less than half of the moon is illuminated

  20. WANING CRESCENT • - phase of the Moon between the third quarter and the new moon, wherein less than half of the Moon is illuminated

  21. NEW MOON • Moon phase in which none of the Moon appears to be illuminated

  22. FULL MOON • Moon phase in which all of the Moon appears to be illuminated

  23. LUNAR ECLIPSE • occurs when the moon passes behind the earth so that the earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly during a full moon

  24. SOLAR ECLIPSE • occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially covers the Sun as viewed from a location on Earth. This can only happen during a new moon

  25. FIRST QUARTER MOON • Moon phase in which exactly half of the Moon appears to be illuminated (occurs when the Moon has gone one quarter [1/4] of the way around Earth).

  26. THIRD QUARTER MOON • Moon phase in which exactly half of the Moon appears to be illuminated (occurs when the Moon has gone three quarters [3/4]of the way around Earth)
