  7. Photographs as “constructed” texts • Photographers or subjects may stage photographs in order to deliver a message • Photographs may depict atypical situations or events • Photographs may be deliberately altered • Photographs may exclude important aspects of a situation

Things to consider: (handout) • Careful attention to details • Geographical data (climate, landscape) • Historical data (clothing, hairstyles, furniture) • Sociological data (social class, relationships) • Emotional context (feelings of people depicted) • Aesthetic qualities (general appeal, use of colour, light, texture) • Photographer/artist’s perspective and purpose (intended audience & messages conveyed)

  9. Working with the Images • In a small group, discuss how you have already used images in the classroom. • What questions would you generate to get students thinking about the images?

  10. Popular Images • Each group will be assigned a famous Canadian image • What are the different ways that you can analyze the image? • Is one way better than the other?

  12. Images as Narrative Tool • Create a group that has a someone with a digital camera and another person with a laptop. • Use a digital camera to record 24 pictures which tells a story. • Day and the life a Teacher Candidate • Literacy tale • ???

  13. Images as a Narrative Tool • Arrange the pictures using image software to create a narrative. • Free programs available on-line (see website) • Return to the class at 11:15 to tell your story. • Post to Digital Literacy Website

Conclusion • We will meet here for attendance and then head down to room 1007 (Scarfe). • We will be doing reading discussions on Friday and Monday. • The remainder of the class on Friday will be to work on your project. • Monday– web quest and/or project • Presentations will take place on Wednesday and Friday
