    1. The Impact of Media Violence on Children and Adolescent Development:

    3. Slide 5: These multi-tasking, multi-media savvy children and teens have a dialogue all their own and it is easy to be left out of their digital loop. 4:20, Deets, Whip…But how well do you know yourself and your generation o f multi-media friends. I get to be a part of the loop. When I first started teaching Media, I had one line and now it has grown to four lines with over 120 students for an elective course. This proves that teens are interested in learning more about their media environments. And I have had seven years of listening to them, teaching them critical literacy skills…. By the end of the course, they are more than just savvy – they are media literate. 5. Violence Statistics By age 18 200,000 Violent Acts 70,000 Murders 29,000 Convicted Sex Offenders are found on MySpace. 60% of female video game characters are sexualized. Playing video games doubles the amount of dopamine in the brain which is equal to a dose of speed. Half of all kids who start smoking do so because they saw it in movies. Nearly 2 out of 3 TV programs contain violence, averaging 6 violent acts per hour. Kids see more than 250,000 commercials aimed at their appearance by age 17. Slide 16: Violence Statistics To give parents an idea of the impacts of media violence and the abundance of it, read the statistics listed on the slide. By age 18 children, will have witnessed 200,000 violent acts on television and 70,000 murders. In 2007, 29,000 convicted sex offenders were found on MySpace (that may not account for those who used an alias name). 60% of female video game characters are sexualized. For example, the game Heavenly Sword’s tag line is “Vengeance has never been so beautiful” since the game features a sexy sword-wielding main character. Playing video games doubles the amount of dopamine in the brain, which is the equivalent of a dose of speed. No wonder gaming can become addictive. 6. Impacts of Media Violence Scares or Traumatizes Promotes Stereotypes Promotes high-risk behaviours (sexual behaviours and attitudes, alcohol use etc.) Encourages imitation Alters brain development Modeling of negative relationships Causes emotional desensitization Stimulates violent or aggressive behaviour

    7. Recognizing Violence Unhealthy Relationships Unrealistic Consequences Dangerous Behaviours and Imitation Alcohol and Substance Abuse Stereotypes Risky Sexual Behaviours Conflict and Cruelty Bullying and Gossip Hate Physical Violence and Assault Slide 17: Recognizing Violence Violence is not limited to the typical “pow, bam” physical actions of characters on television but extends to instances of abuse (e/g. emotional, physical, financial, or verbal abuse), sexual assault, harassment, destruction of property, desctructive forces of nature (e/g. Violent storms or systems), forceful destruction of property, hate speech, conflict, and substance use and abuse. The following slides will now address this wide variety of violence and issues present in today’s media. 8. Television’s Top Rated Shows

    11. London Knights Hockey Fight

    12. Sport Violence Slide 18: Sport Violence  Display pictures of the athletes on the screen. Explain that many of these athletes are role models and have engaged in violent and even illegal activities. Ask participants to consider what message is being sent to young viewers and fans. FOOTBALL - Plaxico Burress The New York Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the leg in a nightclub and is facing a felony weapons charge WWE - this sporting event-meets-soap opera is brimming with non-stop physical violence, including body slams, headlocks, knees to the groin, smacks, punches, and kicks. The violence, although simulated, usually looks very real, and wrestlers are often injured during matches (though this element is played up only for dramatic effect). http://www.commonsensemedia.org SOCCER - Zinedine Zidane was red-carded in the 2006 World Cup final for headbutting Jochen Kientz HOCKEY - Don Sanderson a 21-year-old player, in the Ontario senior men’s league died from injuries sustained from an on ice fight. Sanderson was fighting an opposing player when his helmet came off. Near the end of the fight, both players fell and Sanderson’s unprotected head hit the ice. http://www.dailyheraldtribune.com UFC - Suicide of Justin Levens, 28, who had a couple of UFC fights in 2006 and was a regular in the now-defunct International Fight League in 2007. Levens is believed to have shot his wife, Sara, before killing himself in the couple's Southern California condo. On 16 December 2006 the NBA's leading scorer, Carmelo Anthony was involved in a large brawl in which ten players from the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets (including Anthony) were ejected. The Pacers–Pistons brawl would not be the last major brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills. On July 21, 2008, during a WNBA game between the Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks, a confrontation between the Shock's Plenette Pierson and the Sparks' Candace Parker turned into a bench-clearing brawl (this time, no spectators were involved). Five players from each team drew suspensions of one to four games for their involvement in the melee; Shock coach Rick Mahorn was suspended for two games for escalating the battle; and Shock star center Cheryl Ford was lost for the season with a torn ACL suffered when she tried to restrain one of her teammates. On August 23, 2008 at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Cuban Taekwondo champion Ángel Matos kicked Swedish referee Chakir Chelba in the head then drew blood from him, pushed a judge and spat on the floor after being disqualified in the Bronze Medal match due to his Kye-shi time running out because of a injury to his foot he received during the match. As a result of the incident Matos and his coach Leudis Gonzalez were banned for life by the World Taekwondo Federation. Slide 18: Sport Violence  Display pictures of the athletes on the screen. 13. Drug and Alcohol Abuse Slide 20: Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse To continue, sport highlights are then featured on TSN. The alcohol sponsored show, Molson That’s Hockey shows big goals and big hits. Sport heroes Alex Rodriguez and Michael Phelps disappointed fans with their admissions of drug use. Alex Rodriguez ,of The New York Yankees, admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs during his MVP- winning season with Texas in 2003. Michael Phelps, who was banned from swimming for three months after he was photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe, said he had made a “bad mistake”, a “stupid mistake” and showed “bad judgment”. He was also arrested in 2004 for a DUI. Our children and students look up to sports stars as well as celebrities. Unfortunately, many young artists and celebrities are notorious partiers and drug users who have been in and out of rehab, like singer Amy Winhouse (seen bottom left) whose lyrics ironically say “They tried to make me go to rehab I said no, no, no” or arrested, or ike teen celebrity Lindsay Lohan, for a DUI. Seth Rogan, the star of Knocked up and Pineapple Express (a ‘stoner movie’), has openly admitted to getting busted for smoking marijuana. Slide 20: Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse

    14. Slide 30: Cartoons Parents need to know that, not all cartoons are meant for children. South Park, Family Guy and Robot Chicken are mature programs with offensive messages and images (top from left to right). For example, in one Family Guy episode entitled “You’ve Got AIDS”, Peter Griffin (the father) dances and sings in a barbershop quartet around the bed of a man with end-stage AIDS mocking his diagnosis. This drew protests from several AIDS service organizations. Other cartoons may have prolonged battle scenes. In fact, in the show Teen Titans, little else happens in this show besides violent confrontations. Sure, it's made in the martial arts tradition, where little blood is shown, and skill in battle is rewarded. Children may want to watch the live action Batman movie after seeing the cartoon. Total Drama Island is a cartoon which spoofs reality TV shows like Survivor or Endurance, which may also encourage young children to watch these programs. Total Drama Island is suited for ages 8 to 13 since some of the content warrants a PG rating. Slide 30: Cartoons Parents need to know that, not all cartoons are meant for children. 15. Dangerous Behaviours Slide 21: Dangerous Behaviours Driving under the influence is a dangerous and illegal act as is street racing. In 2006 two Toronto teens, both 18 years were racing their Mercedes Benzes and one of the cars struck a taxi driver, Tahir Khan, and Khan was killed. The video game Need for Speed was found in the wreckage.  This type of story makes us question what kind of impact media has on teen behaviour and choices. The most popular example of mimicking behaviour can be traced back to a man named Johnny Knoxville. Knoxville was the star of a MTV television show called Jackass where people performed various dangerous, ridiculous, and self-injuring stunts and pranks. Since its start in 2000, it has spawned two very successful movies and a video game. Here’s the problem…children and teens are now attempting these stunts, videoing themselves doing them, posting them online, then they are rated by YouTube viewers. YouTube’s tag line is “broadcast yourself” and that’s what these teens are doing. MTV has also created spinoffs likeWildboyz and the newest Nitro Circus. Lastly, mixing alcohol and these activities is never a good idea, so why is Coors Light the sponsor of an extreme games tour. The tag line is “Big air, great tunes and a bunch of guys who might be crazier than you...”     Slide 21: Dangerous Behaviours Driving under the influence is a dangerous and illegal act as is street racing. 16. Cruelty Slide 22: The Culture of Cruel   New technology allows users to take video and pictures and also send and receive these photos and videos instantly. This has become a huge problem at schools. Many schools now ban cell phones due to issues of bullying and violence. Students can quickly text to inform each other of a fight, hey can video students in the bathroom or changerooms and post these online. For example, in Florida, six girls, ages 14 to 17, videotaped themselves beating a 16-year-old cheerleader Victoria Lindsay for over 30 minutes with the intention of posting the video online to humiliate the victim.   The most notorious case of an embarrassing video posting was that of Gyslain Rasa or the Star Wars Kid. His video has been viewed more than 90,000,000 times. He taped himself wielding a golfball retriever imitating moves of a Jedi. Three of his classmates found the video and posted it online. He was ceaselessly teased and eventually he dropped out of school and sued his classmates. There is also the case of Megan Meier' whose parents say she committed suicide after a hoax by a couple who lived down the street posed online as a "cute boy." When "cute boy" apparently turned on Megan, saying he heard she was "cruel" to her friends, she hanged herself.  The mother of a former friend of Megan's created a fictitious profile (posing as “cute boy”) in order to gain Megan's trust and learn what Megan was saying about her daughter. But the communication eventually turned hostile. - ABC News. The cruelty is welcomed by Facebook’s new application which allows friends to send anonymous messages, removing any inhibitions and letting them be completely honest and at times, and nasty. We should also consider if our television encourages similar nasty or mean behaviour …think Simon Cowell - What cruel or crude behaviour is being broadcast? 17. Cell Phones Chatting Texting / Emailing Music Listening / Downloading Sexting Twittering Video Taping / Streaming Viral Pictures and Videos “Sexting" - sending nude pictures via text message - is not unusual, especially for high schoolers around the country. This week, three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a western Pennsylvania high school who received them, are charged with child pornography. In October a Texas eighth-grader spent the night in a juvenile detention center after his football coach found a nude picture on his cell phone that a fellow student sent him. Roughly 20 percent of teens admit to participating in "sexting," according to a nationwide survey (pdf) by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can send and receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS (receive only), or through applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and Feedalizr. The service is free to use over the web, but using SMS may incur phone services provider fees. Estimates of the number of daily users vary as the company does not release the number of active accounts. In November 2008, Jeremiah Owyang of Forrester Research estimated that Twitter had 4-5 million users. A February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranks Twitter as the third largest social network (MySpace would be second and Facebook would be the largest in the world), and puts the number of unique monthly visitors at roughly 6 million and the number of monthly visits at 55 million. Even Barack Obama and Stephen Harper are on Twitter. Video taping / streaming – Verizon Wireless's mobile video service, V Cast--home to 24 Conspiracy--is considered the most ambitious of its kind. Currently, subscribers pay $15 a month (on top of the cost of a voice plan) to view short video clips streamed to compatible phones. Some videos are produced especially for V Cast, such as the 1-minute-per-episode 24 Conspiracy. Subscribers can also watch music videos, CNN news segments, excerpts from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and other short clips on their wireless handsets. Eg. Viral = A viral picture video is something that gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or Instant messaging, blogs and other media sharing websites. Some can be humourous or entertaining, however not always. The problem with the “viral” pictures and videos is that once they are uploaded, they are quickly spread and can be just as easily downloaded, therefore you can never get them back. 18. Viral Videos Known as the Star Wars Kid, Ghyslain Raza taped himself playing with a light saber. Three of his classmates found the footage and put it online. It became one of the top 10 viral videos on YouTube. In one recent Kentucky case a girl was videotaped with a cell phone camera using a school bathroom and it was put on MySpace A 36 year old British pedophile used webcam spyware to retrieve sensitive information from the victims' machines. Reports of bullies forcing students they typically bully to fight one another or risk being beaten up by the bullies. The fight is videotaped and uploaded on YouTube Students are tormenting teachers in classrooms and videotaping their reactions to upload on the Internet Gangs of youth are beating up tourists and homeless people, taping it and either uploading or selling it for a profit – a twist on the usual Bumfights where homeless people are paid to fight and provided with weaponsKnown as the Star Wars Kid, Ghyslain Raza taped himself playing with a light saber. 20. Cell Phones Slide 26: Cell Phones Easy enough for gossip to be spread via cell phone and images captured through hand held devices. Kentucky girl who was videotaped via cell phone in a bathroom stall and it was posted online. Even new driving legislation has been proposed which would allow police to charge drivers who use a hand-held cellular phone, send e-mail or use other hand-held electronic devices while driving. It is important that parents understand their child’s technology to allow for better communication. Inform parents that their text messaging knowledge will now be tested. Tell parents, “if you do not understand this sentence you need to learn text lingo” Progressively click to reveal the answers to each text abbreviation. Allow parents to share answers before the entire phrase is revealed. If parents are concerned about the messages their children are sending, they can buy software such as My Mobile Watchdog to monitor conversations, set up contact lists, and even manage their activity calendar.Slide 26: Cell Phones Easy enough for gossip to be spread via cell phone and images captured through hand held devices. 21. Gun Violence Slide 32: Gun Violence Grand Theft Auto – How do you kill your prostitutes. First person shooter games double the amount of dopmine in your brain which is the equivalent to a dose of speed. It gives you a rush. 22. There are many new kinds of online gaming. Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) is a genre of online role-playing video games (RPGs) in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world. As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (most commonly in a fantasy setting) and take control over many of that character's actions. MORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game.   One of the most popular online games is World of War Craft, which boasts 9 million players worldwide.   Other games include Guild Wars, A Tale in the Desert, The Saga of Ryzom, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and Anarchy Online.   Addicting Games is the largest source of free online games, including arcade games, action games, sports games, puzzle games, flash games and more. Many of the games available for play involve some form of violence or discrimination. These include “Zidane Headbutt” and “So You Think You Can Drive, Mel?” Descriptions:   Super Columbine Massacre – Super Columbine Massacre RPG is a computer game that re-creates with high detail the 1999 Columbine High School shootings near Littleton, Colorado. “You play as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold on that fateful day in the Denver suburb of Littleton. How many people they kill is ultimately up to you." A player may opt for "auto play", in which the game chooses the weapon, or "manual play", in which the player decides whether to use a hand-to-hand weapon, gun, explosive, or defensive maneuver. Once a battle starts, it is impossible to avoid or escape: the player must kill the "enemy" or die. Much of the plotline is constructed around the events precisely as they are believed to have occurred, down to the very minute at which the bombs were set to explode. The boys' dialogue is often lifted verbatim from their writings or from their own home videos of each other. War Craft – World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a pay-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players control a character avatar within a persistent gameworld, exploring the landscape, fighting monsters, and performing quests on behalf of computer-controlled characters. The game rewards success through money, items, and experience, which in turn allow players to improve in skill and power. In addition, players may opt to take part in battles against other players of an enemy faction, including both duels and fights. This is the largest commercial MMORPG as of 2007, based on active descriptions. Zidane Headbutt – Feel the moment again, and be a Zinedine Zidane flash model from the World Cup. Your mission is to head-butt Marco Materazzi. Collect points by head-butting as many of the “Materazzi” images that cross the field as you can. So You Think You Can Drive, Mel? - How many Tequila bottles can you grab before the game ends??? Put the pedal to the metal and keep your eyes on the road. The more you drink and drive, the more your points increase. You get extra points for things like running over Rabbi’s, etc. WWE Raw - These are role-playing type games where you tell the characters what to say. It is wrestling, replete with barbwire ropes, 40 different wrestlers, and some pretty nasty-looking weapons of mass mayhem. There are many new kinds of online gaming. Even holidays such as Halloween and associated movies and television shows can cause children and teens to have feelings of anxiety and fear. From 9/11 to school shootings, environmental dooms day reports, to the California fires, it’s no wonder we don’t all suffer from nightmares. Notes for Presenter: The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting comprising two separate attacks about two hours apart on April 16, 2007 on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. The perpetrator, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people and wounded many more, before committing suicide, making it the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history . Kimveer Gill (July 9, 1981 – September 13, 2006) was the shooter involved in a school shooting referred to as the Dawson College shooting at Dawson College in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on September 13, 2006. 29. Need Rules and Restrictions Keep the computer out of the bedroom and place it in a highly viewable area Plan weekly television viewing Set time limits for all media consumption Tape or use your DVR/PVR to record shows Download only “Clean” or “Radio” versions of music Mobile Phones and driving Homework Inform your children about privacy (help them develop an online nickname and password) Ask to see movie ticket stubs Slide 12: Need Rules and Restrictions Many media safety professionals agree that it is important to keep the computer out of bedrooms and keep them in a highly viewable area. To prevent arguments about media use, plan and set timelines and/or a viewing schedule. To limit consecutive viewing, record programs to view later. Consider if you have clearly defined rules about music in the home. What language, messages, artists etc. will be acceptable. It is important to talk about music downloading - what is ethical and what is acceptable. Drive Now, Talk Later should be your teen’s driving mantra. Phone conversations have been shown to cause a significant cognitive distraction in drivers. What is your rule on homework completion and media participation? Inform your children about privacy (know their online nickname and password). What sites are they allowed to visit? What are the consequences of breaking your computer, television rules? Be assured your teens are watching age appropriate material by asking to see ticket stubs or receipts. These are just a few suggestions to help set guidelines for safe media use in your home.Slide 12: Need Rules and Restrictions Many media safety professionals agree that it is important to keep the computer out of bedrooms and keep them in a highly viewable area. 31. Slide 15: Positive Media Choices Some of the suggestions for positive media are included on this slide and in the handout. Dance Dance Revolution is a game which requires the gamer to stomp on a wired floor pad in sync with the game and music. If you are looking for a mixture of physical activity and gaming, take your child to your local YMCA to play in their Y-ired Zone. On You Tube, there can be some great educational clips and inspiring tales. Check out Free Hugs, Message Me, or an alternative to YouTube is TeacherTube. Education websites such as Discovery Kids and Time for Kids offer a world of exploration and if they are interested in the world, your children may enjoy Unicef’s site Voices of Youth. Instead of Facebook or MySpace, teens may enjoy connecting with others for a cause. Have them check out TakingITGlobal or Think MTV as an alternative social networking site. When renting or visiting the theatre your child may enjoy The City of Ember, Bedtime Stories, or Coraline. MTV has questionable content but offers some retributive shows such as Run’s House and Made. For the socially conscious teen, try T.I.’s Road to Redemption, Girls of Latitude and 4Real. If you’re looking for cute and clean Hip-Hop, listen to Andre 3000’s Class of 3000 soundtrack from the popular television program. Disney lovers will enjoy Camp Rock, all family members will marvel at Planet Earth or Bindy the Jungle Girl. For young children learning to read, check out the puppet show Between the Lions.
