  1. Beyond BritneyUsing assistive technology and educational applications for the popular IPhone and IPod Touch. Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  2. Why Use an IPod in School? • Digital Natives Our students today are all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet. Who are we? • Digital Immigrants Those of us who were not born into the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology. (Prensky, 2001) Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  3. …what is the problem? “The single biggest problem facing education today is that our Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language…” “…. Digital Immigrant teachers assume that learners are the same as they have always been, and that the same methods that worked for the teachers when they were students will work for their students now. But that assumption is no longer valid. Today's learners are different. “ (Prensky, 2002) Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  4. How Can the IPOD Help? Digital Natives are used to receiving information really fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text rather than the opposite. They prefer random access (like hypertext). They function best when networked. They thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards. They prefer games to “serious” work. (Does any of this sound familiar?) (Prensky, 2002) IPOD’s Provide all of this! There’s an app for that! Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  6. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all. (CAST, 2010) Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  7. UDL vs. Differentiated Instruction UDL D.I. * Universal Design for Learning is a theoretical framework developed by CAST to guide the development of curricula that are flexible and supportive of all students (Dolan & Hall, 2001; Meyer & Rose, 1998; Pisha & Coyne, 2001; Rose, 2001; Rose & Dolan, 2000; Rose & Meyer, 2000a, 2000b, 2002; Rose, Sethuraman, & Meo, 2000). • gives students multiple options for taking in information and making sense of ideas • theory based on the premise that instructional approaches should vary and be adapted in relation to individual and diverse students in classrooms (Tomlinson, 2001). Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  8. UDL VS D.I. (CONT) UDL D.I. • The concept of UDL was inspired by the universal design movement in architecture. This movement calls for the design of structures that anticipate the needs of individuals with disabilities and accommodate these needs from the outset. • Necessary for some, beneficial for all requires teachers to be flexible in their approach to teaching and adjust the curriculum and presentation of information to learners Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  9. 3 Principles of UDL Principle 1:To support recognition learning, provide multiple, flexiblemethods of presentation Principle 2:To support strategic learning, provide multiple, flexiblemethods of expression and apprenticeship. Principle 3:To support affective learning, provide multiple, flexible options for engagement. (Rose & Meyer, 2002) Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy

  10. udl “When UDL principles are embedded proactively into the curriculum, differentiation occurs seamlessly. UDL is about multiple methods - of engaging kids, of presenting material to them and then giving students multiple ways to demonstrate what they have learned. When it is incorporated in the curriculum, there is no need for learning style inventories. There's no need for a teacher to feel overwhelmed because they have 25, 50 100 or even 130 students. It's part of the presentation, the engagement, the expression. It's all about offering choices to reach all the students in your classroom, every period of every day. The one size fits all approach never worked. Now there are more resources than ever before to help your students succeed.” (Janowski, 2009) Jennifer Corso, M.S., Ed.S. 2010 for Special Education Conference at Deerfield Academy
