  2. What is ‘Pataphysics? • Created by French writer Alfred Jarry. • “The science of imaginary solutions.” • ‘Pataphysics is dedicated to what lies beyond metaphysics. • Experimental. • Can be applied to science, literature, art, religion, etc.

  3. Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) • Writer best known for the play UbuRoi. • Co-founded the Théatre des Pantins. • Wrote the Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, pataphysician. • Influenced young writers and artists in Paris. • Died of tuberculosis.

More on ‘Pataphysics… • Noted members include: Jean Lescure, Raymond Queneau, Boris Vian, Jean Ferry, and Luc Étienne. • A ‘pataphysicist takes nothing seriously except ‘pataphysics which is to take nothing seriously. • Every event is accepted as an extraordinary event. • There is reality and a supplementary ‘pataphysic reality.

  5. ‘Pataphysics and the Oulipo ‘Pataphysics Oulipo • The College of ‘Pataphysics was founded in 1948. • Members were writers and artists. • Had followers from around the world. • Practiced constrained writing. • Subcommittee of the College of ‘Pataphysics. • Members were French speaking writers and mathematicians. • Used constrained writing techniques like N + 7, and Snowball.
