  1. Individual Purposes and Choices often dictate Preferences No matter the sport or leisure activity we enjoy, there will always be differences and preferences among enthusiasts whether it is the type of golf brand, the tennis racket or kind of shotgun one buys and prefers to use. Think, for example, of the different types of rifles, or handguns, or shotguns on the market, and the choices they offer. Shotguns, for example, are favoured by individuals and groups that enjoy activities such as skeet and wing shooting while hunters may look at the best rifles available to them. The shotgun enthusiast will, much like other firearm enthusiasts, looknat the different shotguns on the market, the different gauges they can choose from, and also the make and model – and brand name. These are some features that are bound to be considered. Of course there are others too. Let us look briefly at an issue such as gauge which is of importance for many. There are different gauges available and naming them goes back a long way into history. Gauge sizes are used to describe the inner bore diameter of shotguns. To remember it easily, it is mentioned that the smaller the gauge number, the larger the bore – or diameter – will be. Therefore: the 10 gauge’s bore is larger than that of the 12 gauge and so on, and it will normally be heavier and slightly more powerful than the 12 gauge. This will, obviously, correspond to the gauges of those that follow, such as the 16, or 20, or 28 gauge, for example. Depending on some individual needs and purposes, most users of shotguns in the US, for example, use the 12 gauge. That is then followed by the 20 gauge. Individuals all have their own needs and preferences in terms of the gauge of the shotgun they purchase. If the hunter wants to throw more pellets, for example, when hunting birds, they will use a larger bore shotgun to deliver a denser shot pattern than a smaller bore gun with a lighter load. So, the hunter of the birds will decide what they prefer: more pellets per shot at target or fewer pellets.

  2. This means they may have to use different gauge options. Experienced bird hunters normally develop their own feel for a preference when they first start out and will therefore settle for a gauge they feel more comfortable with when they buy the shotgun which is just right for them – also with regard to the gauge they choose. Looking at options, the 12 gauge is favored by most because of its versatility in terms of what it is used for by hunters. This gauge is popular among many whether to hunt waterfowl, turkey or small game. It is also popular for others such as those that want to use it for home defence for example. Part of its popularity stems from the fact that it can be used for many different types of prey but also because the recoil is much less severe on the user than, say, the 10 gauge. Because of the popularity of the 12 gauge over many others, it then follows that ammunition for this type of shotgun is found easily at most licenced dealers, whether you are looking for buckshot or slugs. Good dealers make sure they can always supply their customers in this regard. Of course the different gauges will appeal to different hunters and users. The 28 gauge, for example, ranks below the 12 and 20 gauges, but is still very popular among skeet shooters, for example. It is normally associated with lightweight options and those that are referred to as easy to carry shotguns and is normally popular with many who enjoy skeet, and hunting dove, rabbit, squirrel and quail, for instance. Although the 12 and 20 gauges are more popular than others in the US, and many other parts of the world, some users may prefer the other gauges. It depends on preference, and very often on the exposure younger users receive from, say, their parents or members at clubs that they may belong to.
