  2. LANGUAGE • JAPAN - no written language • Chinese used in capital/histories • Eventually developed their own

  3. RELIGION • BUDDHISM and CONFUCIANISM were very important in China. • Buddhism – over time blended with Shintoism • Confucianism (a philosophy) had a lot to say about government and society

  4. GOVERNMENT • The Imperial Court and bureaucracy – titles, etc. all copied from China (Japan no central government) • City planning (layout of the cities) • Road systems (for trade, communication and travel)

  5. SOCIAL ORDER Shogun – military dictator Daimyo – military lords Samurai – warrior class Bushido – code of bravery, loyalty, and honor * Peasants

  6. Also: food/art Rice, noodles, dumplings, all introduced from China China’s style of art, painting influence can still be seen today. Musical instruments originated in China.
