Poster contest • Posters were delivered to each school in addition to an e-mail attachment. • Follow up with administrators to remind them of the due date and to encourage participation. • Posters displayed on our web site, in community areas (arenas, rec centers etc) in addition to a mail out to Brownies, Scouts and Guides. • Prizes were movie pass packages in various age categories • Consortia were consulted and approval granted. School Bus Safety Week

  4. Monthly safety message is written to schools about an aspect of school bus safety. In October, 2013, the letter was addressed to parents supporting the poster theme. Many schools post these messages in their school newsletters. • Number one message to parents: ALWAYS WAIT ON DOOR SIDE • Letter was also posted on the front page of our company website and sent to various community newspapers • Drivers newsletter highlighted Safety week message and teaching tips for kids Parent Info

The problem continued and seemed to escalate and in fact in some areas, parents were putting themselves at risk at bus stops • We asked drivers to please fill out the MTO reporting form • Drivers quit reporting because of the response from police. • Did they actually do a circle check? • How can you be sure your over head lights were on? • Can you identify the driver and vehicle? Complacency

  6. December 6th 2013 , we had a very, very close call with a vehicle passing a vehicle from the rear. • What could we do differently? • Educate, educate and educate. • Keep talking • Asked for police presence at most vulnerable stop locations Close Call

  8. Stephen Blais, local councillor was contacted December 16th. The ask was for awareness and signage. • Talk shows with Stephen focussing on bus safety • February graphics for signs were made and unveiled prior to March break Local Government

  9. Councillor Blais sits on “Safer Roads Ottawa” and he immediately enlisted the committee. The first week back to school, 211 tickets were issued for school bus traffic violations. • The Safer Roads Ottawa Program is a leading partnership between Ottawa Fire Services, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Police Service Ottawa Public Health and the Public Works Department. They are committed to preventing or eliminating road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the City of Ottawa, through culture change, community engagement and the development of a sustainable, safe transportation environment.
