  2. Agenda • Information Security in UAE • My background • My view of the situation • Technical vs Strategic • What can be done • Thoughts on the Future

  3. Information Security in the UAE • Demands for Information Security is increasing • Attacks like on ARAMCO, RAS GAS, etc. increase awareness that Information Security is needed • Cloud services raise a need for Information Security • International, UAE local and federalstandards and guidelines forInformation Security have beenissued

  4. My Background • PhD in Mathematics • Starting with Information Security because of lack of university opportunities • Starting in ISO/IECJTC1 SC 27 • Editor of many standards, incl.ISO/IEC 27001:2013 • Own company in Germany • Director in Help AG ME

  5. My View of the Situation • Demand for information security consultancy is very high, and constantly growing • There is a clear lack of local knowledge and companies, research, initiatives - all behind Europe • Several universities have good programmes, but • It takes time to produce the people needed • The programmes concentrate heavily on technical aspects

  6. Technical vs. Strategic • Information security consists of a lot of different aspects • Technical – protecting against hacking, code breaking, system intrusion, denial of service, … • Non-Technical – policies and procedures, social engineering, awareness training, compliance with standards, … • Both need to come together to achieve information security

  7. What can be done • More initiatives on non-technical topics, to achieve a better balance (university programmes, ISA) • Practical experience – internships, working as consultant, more involvement in the private sector • Understand the market need • Take activity to address it • Use your personal way to increase security by talking to people and make them see

  8. Thoughts on the Future • The interest in information security and standard compliance will increase • The security problems will surely increase • Amount of data and interconnectivity will increase • Cloud services will change the IT landscape • Far more opportunities to get involved
