About IYCN • The Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) is a coalition uniting Indian youth and Indian youth oriented organisations who are concerned about climate change to generate awareness and establish consensus on what role India should play in the global debate, and how it should address domestic issues of climate justice and adaptation.It is a registered national soceity under the soceities registeration act of 1860. • IYCN works on three levels: • As a network of individuals allowing people to come together and interact at a grassroots level, form friendships and support each other. • As a coalition of member and supporter groups who come under the umbrella group of IYCN, however maintain their autonomy, yet leverage off a national network of young people passionate about the environment and development. • As a centralised organisation that runs its own programs and projects, accepts sponsorship and donations and forms partnerships and runs media campaigns.

Why Green Solutions for J&K? • Did you know that the Kolahai glacier, the major source of fresh water to the Kashmir valley, has reduced by 18% in the past three decades? • Did you know that daily 40 ml of sewage out of 15 drains enter the Dal Lake? • Did you know that more than half of the valley has a huge energy deficit? • Did you know that the area of Dal Lake has shrunk from 25 square kilometers to 15 square kilometers in the last half century?

  4. Environmental problems in J&K • Shrinking water bodies and wetlands • Deforestation • Lack of Energy • Soil degradation • Melting Glaciers • Rapid depletion of snow cover • Reduced Water Supply

Current solutions in J&K • Solutions in the region are outdated • Not suitable to the climatic conditions of the valley • Require heavy maintenance • Consume lot of energy When the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) installed in houseboats by different firms were examined, some were outdated, some failed to function due to the climatic conditions, while others were too large and were unaesthetic, spoiling the beauty of the houseboats and the lake.

The demand and the market side • Waste- implementation of waste management projects • Water- need for effective sewage treatment plants • Energy- improve and increase the supply of power & alternative sources of energy • Forestry and Biodiversity- increase green cover areas • Awareness – Increase awareness about sustainability amongst the youth and people of J&K

The roadblocks and challenges • Funds- currently under utilized • Technology inadequacy- lack of adequate green and clean technology use due to the region’s isolation from the rest of the country • Awareness and Education- lack of general public awareness of environmental related problems because of unavailability of green jobs and few NGOs working in the field. • Govt. Support – Lack of clear govt. Support programs on reduction of these problems.

Authorities, Industrialists and Entrepreneurs willing to invest as partners or franchisees. • Eco Club expositions offering students the space to share their innovative green solutions and technologies • Youth Fest engaging and educating the youth of the region through various interactive activities
