Global Issues: Forms of Government Broad Categories of Government Power: Democratic: people (citizens) hold power over through choice Autocratic: country run according to the interests of the ruler rather than the will of the people. (ruler holds power) Anocratic: country that is not fully democratic, but not fully autocratic. (power is shared, not necessarily equally) Key Difference: 1) Selection of leaders; 2) Participation of citizenship; 3) Checks and balances

  2. Global Issues: Forms of Government Autocratic Governments Monarchy: power is within the “blood line” of the royal family. Absolutely exclusive. Oligarchy: power is controlled by small group of individuals. Dictatorship: power & control come from use of the military to “prop” up the leader Totalitarian State: extreme form of dictatorship where leader has total control of a society Theocracy: the use of religious authority to justify use of power

  3. Global Issues: Forms of Government Democratic Governments Direct Democracy: People exercise direct control of all decision of government (popular majority) Republic (limited democracy): people elect representatives to make all the decision of government.
