  7. VXS-1 Research Configured C-12 Aircraft

Introduction • Introduce and propose a research configured C-12 aircraft that can add to the atmospheric research support fleet. • VXS-1 maintain and fly a C-12M aircraft specifically configured for atmospheric research • Research communities can utilize through a VXS-1 and CIRPAS MOA • Prospective users provide sensor packages and VXS-1 will facilitate permanent installation • Low cost world-wide support • User pay only flight hour and per-diem/travel of Navy flight crew • Flight hour rate currently $1500 per hr

Range: 2262 miles with max fuel at 35,000 ft. Service Ceiling: 35,000 ft. Weights: operating empty 9060 lb., maximum at take off 14,500 lb Accommodation: 2 pilots plus 8 passengers or 2648 lbs of cargo Dimensions: Span 54 ft 6 in Length 38 ft 5 in Height 14 ft 10 in Wing Area 303 sq ft

  10. C-12 Modifications Interior Completely “Gutted” in order to - Run project power cables - Add power junction boxes - Add antenna mounting pad

  11. Most of the modifications and equipment additions center around the fuselage from immediately aft of the Flight Station to the cabin door. Fuselage Detail

  12. The C-12 is designed for modularity and increased “Roll on/Roll off” (RO-RO) capability.

  13. Equipment racks can be arranged anywhere along the seat tracks as long as floor load limits are not exceeded. Standard 19” Racks Rated for 20g’s

  14. Power Distribution Box The power distribution box can be mounted along the seat tracks or inside of an equipment rack.

  15. Light Weight 20G Rated Rack • Rack Notes: • - Rack is 24” deep x 22” wide x 28” tall with standard 19” MX mounting pattern • 30” deep variation also designed • Designed to be lightweight to allow for more equipment, and lower cost • Equipment weight approx 200 Lbs

Power Distribution Box • Project Power Distribution Box: • Can be mounted to seat tracks or horizontally in equipment racks • Provides project power at various outputs: • 115 VAC @ 400HZ, (1X) 10 Amp circuit, and (2X) 5 Amp Circuits • 115 VAC @ 60HZ, (1X) 15 Amp circuit, (1X) 10 amp circuit • 28 VDC (1X) 10 Amp circuit, (2X) 5 Amp Circuits

  20. Installed Project GPS to make the C-12 test bed similar to the VXS-1 P-3 Aircraft GPS Antenna mounting location • GPS Antenna Notes: • The GPS antenna is located on the upper fuselage

  21. One inverter has been installed into the starboard wing. • Inverter Notes: • Location for inverter based on previous installations. • Aircraft can support installation of 2 inverters

  24. Wing tip pods/tanks could be installed for use with probes or other sensors. RC-12N • Wing Tip Pods: • Added for use with additional sensors • Discussions held with NAVAIR Structures for approval

Tip Tank Modification • VXS-1 has 2 tip tanks on hand • Tip tanks mount on the wing tips. • Formerly fuel tanks modified to carry electronics. • Incorporate a “Rail” system for slide in/slide out (SI/SO) capability. • Electronic equipment can be mounted to a blank plate which allows for SI/SO.   27. Provisions for Electro-Optics Windows

  28. An optical window could be installed in the radome with increased structure to support project options. • Radome Window: • Will allow for large instruments to be used that require optical windows Radome with window C-12 radome model

  29. The window frame could replace an existing window with optical glass for project support. • Window Frame Notes: • Analysis is needed to find the best location for mounting the window. Possible location for window frame with optical glass

  30. Additional Modifications

  31. Raised fairings and an extended nose cone are some of the ideas to allow for increased capabilities. • Raised Fairings: • Used to mount radiometers • Extended Nose: • Used to take in inlet air for analysis

  32. Exit chute out bottom of the aircraft • Exit Chute: • Will allow for releasing dropsondes from cabin of C-12.
