  2. How do we rank? • 14th in the UK in THE ranking for 2008 RAE • 5th in UK in number of departments at no.-1 position. • So we have a long way to go but we can get there!

Major items for 2008/09 • Raise the profile of and good practice in research • Research Forum, • follow up the ‘Big Ideas’ initiative • interdisciplinary initiative - SDF Fund! • Creative sabbatical leave • Work with the new, evolving Research Office • Alerting, costing, internal review, financial management, assessment (comparators) • Getting Durham connected (e.g. AHRC panels) • Encouraging international research partnerships • Harvard? Fudan .. Other “bottom up” partnerships • Assessing the implications of RAE 2008 • Participating in the REF pilot and developing the necessary processes to deal effectively with REF.
