    25. Lead questions for my conference: What does this EXPLORE report cover? What help would be useful? How did you do on the academic part? Strong areas? Areas for improvement? Compared to others? What courses will you take in high school? What career fields interest you? What careers does the report suggest? Explain the circle on the back of the report How can this report help you as you register for high school?

    26. PLAN® Preparatory ActivityCollege Admissions Panel Prior to administering the PLAN, call the high school counselor and ask if a couple of conscientious college bound seniors could come and talk to GEAR UP juniors about college tests and their college admission experiences. You could also use 12th grade Ambassadors. The goal is to emphasize the importance of grades, test scores, application, and perhaps the essay to reach the goal of going to college.

    27. College Admissions Panel Tips for Staff Perhaps talk with your GEAR UP juniors prior to the panel to set up questions they want answered. Meet with the seniors, ambassadors, or UW Mentors prior to the panel to explain what you want them to cover. Collaborate with then on their comments on the importance of test scores, grades, and the application process.

    28. PLAN Follow-up Activity #1Marketing Me-My Portfolio In the next few years you will have to “market yourself” to college admissions committees and to potential employers. They will need evidence that you have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience to be successful. Many schools are now suggesting students have a portfolio documenting their competencies to convince colleges to admit them and employers to hire them.

    29. Create a Marketing Portfolio for Yourself Include: A resume for a job you could get in the next year The names/phone numbers of two references A copy of your high school transcript Your PLAN Report The GEAR UP Scholars Project Activities chart (check activities you have completed) A description (perhaps from the internet) of two colleges you are considering If your school requires a planning portfolio, you may work from that portfolio.

    30. Marketing Me-My Portfolio Staff Tips Check with local schools to confirm whether students have started portfolios. If they have portfolios, have students being them in to spiff them up & add items. A sample resume for 10th graders is included. Have the students do a college search using WOIS, DISCOVER, or Think College Early. When they take the ACT they will be asked to identify potential colleges.

    31. PLAN® Follow-up Activity #2Preparing for College Entrance Exams using PLAN® In a couple of years you will be applying for college. You will need to take a college entrance exam The ACT is a college entrance exam Your PLAN score predicts your approximate score on the ACT Your PLAN Report indicates your anticipated strong and weak areas on this exam

    33. Preparing for College Admissions ExamsStaff Tips The language used on the standards/pathways charts is quite academic Encourage students to focus on improving one skill that could raise their score. Conduct a workshop session for your tutors explaining Standards and Pathways so that tutors can help students focus on specific skills. You may want to invest in one of several publications designed to help students score their best on the ACT.

    34. PLAN Follow Up Activity #3College Scavenger Hunt Go to the website: www.thinkcollege/early Working with your team go into the student section and find the answers to the following questions: What does A.A stand for? What is a four year college degree called? What is the yearly tuition at Harvard University What days can you tour/visit Seattle University? What was the average cost in 2000 for a year at a 4-year college including tuition room and board? Hint: The Preparation =Success and Your Mind is your Ticket subsites have some good info.

    35. College Scavenger HuntStaff Tips If you don’t have adequate computers ask if you can use the computer center at school. Have students work in teams of three finding the answers. Location for the answers on TCE website: 1 & 2 are found under Preparation and Planning = Success 3 & 4 are found under Your Mind is Your Ticket then finding the Right College, then college list A-z 5 is found under Yes, You Can Affor College, then What Does College Cost? Another idea would be to have students compete to search out the best college college planning website and justify why it is best.

    36. PLAN® Follow-Up Activity #4Helping my parent/sponsor understand my PLAN® report What is PLAN®? In which academic areas did you do the best? In what areas could you improve ? What does this National Rank section mean? Explain the estimated ACT score. What is a good score for getting into college? In what areas could you use help to be more successful in high school and college? Will the classes listed here qualify you for college? What career fields interest you? Explain the circle on the back of the report How can you use this report as you prepare for college?

    37. ACT Preparatory Activity #1Practicing for the ACT Go to the ACT website, www.act.org. Click on Student and answer the sample test questions Complete sample test in the “Preparing for the ACT Assessment” booklet. You can get this booklet from your high school counselor. Use the ACTive Prep software available at your site.

    38. Practicing for the ACT Staff Tips Students can do this activity independently as computers are available. Meet with students after all have completed the questions to discuss their impressions. Go over any questions that were frustrating This will require that a staff member have some familiarity with the questions. Move from this activity into suggestions for doing well on the ACT

    39. ACT Preparation Activity #2The College Search Go to the www.ACT.org website Click on Students Click on College Search Answer the questions to find colleges that match your interests Choose two schools that interest you and find out: How much the school costs per year The admissions requirements of the school Which “majors” they offer that interest you What percent of students receive financial aid

    40. The College SearchStaff Tips The college search activity should occur prior to the students taking the ACT because on the ACT they are asked to identify colleges that interest them. The ACT report then provides specific information on the ACT scores that these colleges tend to accept. The Higher Ed Book is a VERY useful resource book for helping students who plan to attend college in Washington State.

    41. ACT Follow-up Activity #1Improving your ACT Score What is your ACT composite score?____ English _____ Reading____ Math____ Science____ Find your composite score on the mustard yellow Standards for Transition chart. What composite score would you like to have to qualify for your first choice college?_____ Go to the purple Standards for Transition chart and locate your four subject scores on the four charts The purple standards bar indicates what you know. The lavender pathways bar indicates what you can do to raise your score in that subject In what subjects do you need most to improve? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    42. Improving Your ACT Score Staff Tips It is possible that some students will conclude that their ACT scores are adequate. This activity is appropriate for students who feel their scores are not sufficient to gain them entrance to their preferred college. A suggestion would be that during the month prior to the next ACT administration a tutor conduct specific ACT prep sessions using PLAN® scores and ACT website and materials.

    43. ACT Follow-up Activity #3The College Visit In a team of 4, arrange to visit a college that interests the group. Two in your group visit the admissions office and ask the “admissions officer” questions. Two in your group interview a college student using the “college student” questions. Organize a short presentation sharing what you learned with other GEAR UP students.

    44. The College Search/Visit Staff Tips If you can manage it this activity is best done in teams so that you can get reports on several colleges. If this is not possible, you could have students on the five day tour specialize in interviewing and reporting on a specific college and then present their team report to 8th-10th graders.

    45. ACT Follow-up Activity #4The College Application Get from either the GEAR UP coordinator or your school counselor one of the following applications: Washington 4 year college application Community college application Private college application Fill in the application-every line. Have your GEAR UP coordinator check it over. Apply for the college by sending in the paper copy or apply over the internet on the college’s website. Keep a copy of your completed applications

    46. The College ApplicationStaff Tips This activity is to ensure that your students actually do apply for college before the deadlines. You can download most applications from college websites for draft efforts. You might want to enlist the help of a local high school counselor in reviewing the applications, tho the issues are most typically that students leave out key information

    47. ACT Follow-up Activity #4Helping my parent/sponsor to understand my ACT report What is the ACT? How did you do on the academic section? How do your scores compare with other college bound students? What is your current GPA? What college major are your thinking about? What job could you get with that major? What are your priorities for choosing a college? Please explain what this circle means. Do your current interests match your career plans? What colleges have you been looking at? Based on your current ACT score what are you chances of getting accepted at each?
