  1. Strategic Science TeachingGrade Seven – Earth Science Connecting Literature with the California Science Standards SST 7th/Earth Science

  2. A model lesson for each grade level: • Literature selection • Science Standards • Literacy Strategy • Science Investigation SST 7th/Earth Science

  3. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/sc/ll/ SST 7th/Earth Science

  4. Browse The Elements Of The Lesson • Standards Alignment • Lesson at a Glance • Teacher Background • Materials and Advanced Preparation • Teacher Tips • Common Misconceptions • Explicit Script for delivering the lesson through the 5E instructional model • Teacher Reflection • Teacher and Student pages SST 7th/Earth Science

  5. The 5E Model of Instruction SST 7th/Earth Science

  6. Dr. Art’s Guide to Planet Earthby Art SussmanHow Long Ago Was That? • Essential Question: How does evidence found on Earth help us understand the evolution of life? • Student Outcomes: • Students understand the relationships between major geologic events and the evolution of life on Earth. • Students construct a geologic time scale using their own calculations to determine positions of events in Earth’s history. • Students use “Analogy Graphic Organizer” to enhance their understanding of the concepts of time and scale. SST 7th/Earth Science

  7. The 5E Learning Cycle Engage What do I already know about fossils and the history of life on Earth? What do I want to know more about? SST 7th/Earth Science

  8. Explore Scale and Proportion Create a personal timeline with milestones, evidence of major events. SST 7th/Earth Science

  9. Explore Geologic Time Scale Calculate the distance to represent time intervals between major geologic event using 1mm (0.1cm) to represent 1 million years Construct a geologic time scale using a 5-meter paper strip. (Directions on Student page 2.1) SST 7th/Earth Science

  10. Learning Strategy: Analogy Graphic Organizer Provides a visual framework for students to identify similarities/differences between a new concept and their prior knowledge. SST 7th/Earth Science

  11. Explain Compare to "Engage" Revisit the student generated questions which were charted. Is there an opportunity to revise those answers based on the learning? SST 7th/Earth Science

  12. Evaluate • Ask students to demonstrate their understanding of analogies and scale by sharing their Analogy Graphic Organizers, listing the similarities and differences, and noting any added relationship categories. • Using at least three sources of data (at least one web reference if possible), ask students to explain significant developments and extinctions of plant and animal life on Earth that they added to their time scale. • Return to the ENGAGE questions and have students assess their own learning. SST 7th/Earth Science

  13. Elaborate Research Geologic Time Add more evidence to answer new questions and compare findings to the time scale constructed. SST 7th/Earth Science

  14. Teacher Reflection • How does the student work provide evidence that the student understand about the relationship between geologic time and major events in Earth’s history? • What instructional strategies used in this lesson promote student understanding? How do you know? • How does the literature selection support student understanding of the science concept? • How would you modify instruction to ensure understanding of student outcomes by all students? SST 7th/Earth Science
