  1. Sentence Structure

  2. Introduction to Sentence Structure There are four basic sentence types. These types are called structures because they describe how a sentence is built. Much like a building, a sentence is constructed with parts; each part performs a specific function in the sentence. The four basic sentence structures are the: 1. Simple sentence 2. Compound sentence 3. Complex sentence 4. Compound-complex sentence

  3. 1. The Simple Sentence A simple sentence is just that—the simplest sentence structure we have. It has one main clause. A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate (verb). Here are some examples of simple sentences: She has dreamed of being a wellness coach for years. subject verb He studies a lot. She loves her job. They are opening a natural products store.

  4. 2. The Compound Sentence Compound sentences join two main clauses with a conjunction. Conjunctions are linking words (and, but, or). Here are some examples of compound sentences: He is a professional paramedic, andhe is also a full-time aromatherapy student. (main clause) (main clause) She is studying for a Certificate in Aromatherapy, and she is considering completing the Holistic Health Practitioner Program, too.

  5. 3. The Complex Sentence Complex sentences include one main clause and one subordinate clause. We have already defined a clause as a group of words that has a subject and a predicate (verb). A subordinate clause (also called a dependent clause) begins with a subordinating conjunction (such as since or because) and needs a main clause to ground it. Here are some examples of complex sentences: She was surprised to see fresh lavender bloomsbecauseof the season. (main clause) (subordinate clause) He decided to enroll in the Master Herbalist program since natural remedies are a personal hobby.

  6. 4. The Compound-Complex Sentence The compound-complex sentence is a combination of at least two main clauses and one subordinate clause. Here are some examples of compound-complex sentences: Janet got her clippers; John needed help harvesting the hops in his garden because the strobiles were unruly. (main clause) (main clause)(dependent clause) Paul is a Community Herbalist because he loves to help people, and he owns a large rural farm with rows and rows of fresh herbs.
