  1. Do Now: • Take out the Katy Perry packet. • Write down a theme sentence about EITHER “Roar” or “Lamb to Slaughter”. • Your writing notebook should look like: • 1) People should stand up for what they believe in. Do NOT use our sentence!!!!

  2. Revising our theme • People should stand up for what they believe in. • Standing up for your beliefs defines who you are. • Character can be defined by how one stands up for what they believe in. • Highlight the key ideas in your sentences. • Think: Self, what can I do to bring forward my idea? • Manipulate the language to make it more powerful.

  3. INTRODUCTION • When I was younger people used to get me to believe whatever they wanted me to believe. I was naïve and easily swayed. If someone told me not to hang out with someone I wouldn’t because I placed more value in what they thought than what I believed in. Each and every time I did that a part of what made me who I am chipped away. In “Roar” by, Katy Perry she sings about the importance of standing up for what you believe in. “I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything,” Falling for everything causes one to become lost without an idea of who they are and what their beliefs are. Character can be defined by how one stands up for what they believe in.

  4. Ms. Jennings how do I start this? • The author uses , which shows the theme by . • One technique the author uses to show is by . • The author’s use ofidioms illuminates the idea that standing up for oneself is important in the universal human experience by showing a common phrase that people use. The reader feels a sense of connection with what she is singing about. When Katy Perry uses the phrases ‘eye of the tiger’, ‘bite my tongue’ and ‘rocking the boat’ she reaches out to her audience with phrases they have both either heard or used. It becomes obvious that speaking out for what you believe in is an experience that everyone has. Many times in our life we literally “bite our tongue” and stay silent because we fear, “rocking the boat”. However, “rocking the boat” is exactly what needs to happen at times. Rocking the boat allows for social and personal change. It is not easy to do so and sometimes it feels like you have to become like a “tiger” in order to do this.
