  6. Why is a college education so important? As technology & worker efficiency rapidly expand, the global job market is shifting away from high wage, low skill jobs to high/medium wage, high skill jobs. Jobs that once paid good wages are being replaced by technology or cheaper labor overseas. In the 21st Century, the jobs that command a family supporting wage require workers to have an advanced set of skills that the typical worker in the 20th century did not need.

Why is a college education so important? 21st Century Skills • Ways of thinking. Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and learning • Ways of working. Communication and collaboration • Tools for working. Information and communications technology (ICT) and information literacy • Skills for living in the world. Citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility In order to be competitive in the global economy, students must master these skills! Education beyond high school is the norm.

What do you need to do TODAY to prepare for college • WWW.PARENTTOOLKIT.COM • A FREE On-Line resource that gives you tips & guides through every year of school. • Gives parenting tips for helping your student in Math & Reading, by grade level • Gives you a list of skills that students should acquire, by every grade level • Has a guide for Parent Teacher Conferences.

  16. What do you need to do TODAY to prepare for college? MONITOR YOUR CHILD’s Academic Progress Grades: Aim for a 3.0 & Higher, B or A in every core academic class Test Scores: 18 or better on the ACT-PLAN, 21 or better on the ACT Extra-Curricular Activities: Get your child involved in something that develops their creativity, athleticism, leadership, or academic skill set. Can be sponsored by school, church, municipality, or non-profit organization.
