  3. CURRICULUM • Textbook/Software Review • Software evaluation rubric developed • Publishers’ presentations • Developed an approved list • Currently class testing new materials

  4. CURRICULUM • Course Syllabi • All MDC Mathematics Departments have developed course syllabi for the four at-risk courses. • These syllabi incorporate frequent testing/assessment.

  5. INSTRUCTION • Learning Styles • Arrangements have been made with a consultant to offer learning styles workshops, Spring 2006.

  6. INSTRUCTION • Supplemental Instruction • Arrangements have been made with a consultant to offer workshops for the supplemental instruction trainers.

  7. SUPPORT • Lab Upgrades • North Campus: Remodeled and renovated the math lab. • Kendall Campus: Relocated College-Prep Math Lab and made substantial improvements • Wolfson Campus: Remodeled and renovated the math lab • Homestead Campus: New math lab is under construction, expected to open April 2006. • InterAmerican Campus: Math lab expanded for QEP-related activities. • Hialeah Campus: A new math lab is being planned.

  8. SUPPORT • Prescription forms. • Mathematics faculty are currently discussing the methodology and format of the prescription forms. • Mathematics faculty are discussing the logistics for referring students to the math lab.

  9. SUPPORT • Interim Progress Reports • Piloted by mathematics faculty in 2004-2 and 2004-3/4. • Mathematics faculty provided input concerning the comment section. • Utilized college-wide on a voluntary basis by all MDC faculty.

SUPPORT • Tutor Training • “Train the Tutor Trainers” Workshop I was conducted November 2005. • “Train the Tutor Trainers” Workshop II scheduled for January 2006. • Workshops for math lab tutors scheduled to begin February 2006. • Developing student surveys to evaluate the labs and tutoring services. • Activities will culminate in College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification.

  11. ADVISEMENT • Alternatives to MAC 1105 • Discussing changing the prerequisite for STA 2023 to either MAC 1105 or MGF 1106. • Conducting further research to identify majors not requiring MAC 1105. • Identifying mathematics faculty that use alternative teaching and assessment strategies in MAC 1105.

  12. ADVISEMENT • Advisement Brochure • Developing a brochure for faculty, advisors, and students that will encourage students to enroll in their first mathematics course no later than their 12th credit and to complete their mathematics requirements “back-to-back.”

  13. ADVISEMENT • Mathematics Advisement Web Page • Hired a professional web designer to develop an advisement web page for mathematics.

  14. ASSESSMENT • Proctored Testing Centers • Campuses need to identify dedicated spaces for mathematics testing during Spring 2006. • Campuses need to staff the testing centers with proctors.

  15. ASSESSMENT • Types of Assessment • Committee has identified different types of assessments: quizzes, exams, homework, on-line homework, take-home exams, group work, projects, board work, class participation

  16. ASSESSMENT • Frequency of Assessment • Recommendations for frequent assessments have been made for all at-risk courses. • Frequent assessments were included in all course syllabi for the at-risk courses.

  17. RESEARCH • Emailed Pass Rate Data • When? • Faculty pass rate data will be compared to campus data, college data, and the 2008 QEP goals.

  18. RESEARCH • Design of Experiments • Assessing QEP strategies using classical experimental designs (experimental vs. control groups). • Attitude survey was developed.

  19. RESEARCH • Statistical Analyses • Interim progress reports • Learning communities • Retention rates vs. withdrawal rates
